Terry and Benitez rubbish reports of quarrel after Chelsea’s FA Cup victory
John Terry has faced a ton of problems on and off the field in the past year. The Football Association stripped from England captaincy, Chelsea decided to bench him for good and repetitive injury issues sidelined him for most of current season.
Truth be told, John Terry has been on the fringes at Stamford Bridge this season even though the 32-year-old center back is still Chelsea’s first-captain. Reportedly, growing rift between John Terry and Chelsea’s interim manager Rafael Benitez is causing a lot of unrest at Stamford Bridge.
Well, John Terry has labeled such reports as rubbish and given Chelsea’s 4-0 victory over Brentford in the FA Cup as proof of Chelsea’s success. Chelsea scored four goals in the second-half through Juan Mata, Oscar, Frank Lampard and John Terry to proceed to the next round of the FA Cup where they will Middlesbrough.
Rafael Benitez and John Terry have repeatedly denied reports about bust-up between the player and the manager. It appears as the Old Guard has offered an olive branch to the former enemy of Chelsea.
“I read those stories in the paper but it is completely lazy journalism. It’s total rubbish,” John Terry said.
“The manager knows me and I want to play. I have been out for two or three months but the other two [centre-backs] have been doing well. It’s good to have competition.”
According to reports Rafael Benitez and John Terry clashed earlier this month. Former Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo got the sacking orders after fighting with the Old Guards of Chelsea, therefore, reports of Rafael Benitez’s clash sparked rumors about his exit.
“It’s totally rubbish,” Rafael Benitez said in response to his exit and fight with John Terry. “We didn’t have any problem. He was training yesterday, we had normal conversations. Everything was fine. I was really surprised.”
Chelsea could be placed against Manchester United at the Old Trafford in the Sixth Round of the FA Cup if they beat Middlesbrough and the Red Devils overcome Reading on Sunday night.
Rafael Benitez was all praise for the Old Guards of Chelsea after the game. The Spaniard lauded John Terry, Ashley Cole and Frank Lampard for showing maturity and impressive form. Frank Lampard scored his 199th goal for Chelsea, yet Rafael Benitez wasn’t sure if he will be handed a new contract.
“Every time [I am asked] I will give the same answer,” Rafael Benitez said. “He’s doing well, he’s scoring goals. Hopefully he can score another 15 this season.”
