Texans learned Dolphins' snap count by watching HBO's "Hard Knocks"
It's unexpected news that a defense can learn an opponent's snap count by watching a weekly series on HBO. It's even more unexpected news that a channel called the NBC Sports Network actually exists.
We don't have an actual confirming quote from Watt, but the report that the Texans' DE learned the Dolphins snap count from "Hard Knocks" is confirmed on the ProFootballTalk web site. "(Watt) was a little sheepish and guarded when explaining it to co-host Erik Kuselias," writes host and founder Mike Florio, "saying that the same information can be picked up from the preseason game broadcasts. But Watt said that it helped."
"Hard Knocks had a heck of a time finding an NFL team willing to appear on the show this season. According to NFL.com, the Seahawks, Falcons, 49ers, Broncos, Redskins, and even Watt's own Houston Texans declined invitations to be featured on the weekly HBO series chronicling one NFL team's training camp. Now we might have some idea why they declined.
"Pro Football Talk" is a new television show broadcast every weekday at 5 p.m. ET on the NBC Sports Network. Apparently the NBC Sports Network does exist and has regular broadcasts. I'd say more about them, but their web site is a little short on details.
