Over the final days leading up to kickoff, we'll be interviewing college football's top bloggers to give us some insight, wit and predictions for the school they passionately follow.Last week we interviewed the Sooners' Crimson and Cream Machine, but there are very few blogging rivals of Burnt Orange Nation, simply one of the best blogs in these fine interwebs. If you wanted a blueprint on how to run a team specific blog, I'd direct you to the architect Peter Bean. A busy man, I was fortunate enough to steal some of his time to talk college football and more particularly the Texas Longhorns ...
What gets you most excited for the upcoming football season?
PB: Without question, I'm positively giddy to see what this Texas offense can accomplish in 2007. With Colt McCoy and his top six pass catchers returning, this has a chance to be as explosive an offense as there is in the country.
Of course, I'm also just excited about having Saturday be the best day of the week again. They feel so empty when college football season ends.
Austin is at the top of my list for a fall football destination weekend. Map out the ideal Fri, Sat, Sun itinerary. (yes, bars = good)
PB: On Friday night, you'd be wise to take in a nice dinner and some margaritas down by the lake. There are a half a dozen great places to choose from - just make sure you're sitting on the water, eat some great food, and don't drink too much.
Get up early on Saturday and head on down to the Stadium. Get there nice and early, set up your tailgate, start cooking the food, and crack open your beverage of choice. After Texas wins, go celebrate downtown, starting on 4th Street and, when you're drunk enough not to notice how many idiots you're surrounded by, work your way up to 6th Street. Try to take a cab home, will ya?
Sunday is a day for recovery, and I'd recommend you head to one of the many outstanding barbecue joints to replenish your body. Eat some good brisket and talk about the Saturday happenings with you and your closest friends.
We all know about Colt McCoy, who's the one player who will be the most valuable Longhorn this season besides Colt?
PB: Limas Sweed. He's the best receiver in the Big 12, and Phil Steele ranks him as the top receiver in the entire country. He's big, he's fast, and he's learned how to use his body to his advantage. It's becoming near-impossible to cover him with single coverage, which means you have to commit safety help to contain him. That opens up a lot of options for Texas elsewhere.
What's your biggest concern for the Longhorns going into the season?
PB: Without question, it's the short-yardage running game. It was our biggest weakness last season and simply can't be again in 2007.
In brief, your prediction for the Longhorns this season ... and the players we need to know?
PB: This is a very strong Longhorn team and, if not a national title contender, certainly a BCS Bowl contender. I'd guess Texas gets tripped up at some point, finishing with one or two losses. I like our chances of winning the Big 12 and earning a trip to the Fiesta Bowl.
Players of note, Offense: Colt McCoy, Jamaal Charles, Limas Sweed, Quan Cosby, Jermichael Finley
Players of note, Defense: Frank Okam, Derek Lokey, Brian Orakpo, Marcus Griffin
Team you fear the most in the Big XII?
PB: As always, Oklahoma. With that said, the conference should be improved from top to bottom in 2007. Oklahoma State and Texas A&M will present challenges in the South Division, while Nebraska and Missouri are dangerous teams in the North.
What freshman do you have the highest hopes for?
PB: The player with the most buzz is John Chiles, but it's not clear how (or if) the coaches intend to use him. I'm most excited about the true freshmen Mack Brown brought in on the offensive line. Tray Allen and Michael Huey should make the two-deep this year, while the group as a whole is one of the best OL recruiting hauls in NCAA history.
Most overrated team in the Big XII ... Most underrated?
PB: I'll take a pass on this one for now, as people haven't begun hyping up teams too much yet. I'm not totally sold on Nebraska yet, and I do think Texas A&M has a chance to be a better team than most realize.
Word Association: (first word that comes to mind)
Colt McCoy -- Winner
Oklahoma Sooners -- Spawn of Satan
Rhett Bomar -- Pathetic
Eric Metcalf -- Flash
Major Applewhite -- Future Texas Coach
Oct 6th -- Glorious
National Champs -- Vince Young
Eric Metcalf is my all time favorite Longhorn. Who tops your list?
PB: Vince Young. There is no close second.
You're a 5-star recruit, you have the choice of any college in the country (besides UT) where are you headed?
PB: Georgia.
First blogs you read each morning?
PB: EDSBS, MGoBlog, SMQ, my Big 12 RSS feeds
One bold prediction (i.e. longshot for conference title, heisman, NC, etc) for the upcoming season?
PB: The Boise State-Hawaii winner plays in a BCS bowl
Thanks Peter!
