The 4th December sees the draw for the World cup, and whilst the seedings have not been decided yet this is what they may well look like

Fifa will be over the moon. The world is talking about the world cup (or at least about Thierry Henry), and they have all of their big stars in the tournament (with the exception of Russia I would say). Portugal are in-thus Cristiano Ronaldo is in. Argentina are in-so that means Lionel Messi is there, as are Spain, France, Italy, Germany, England and many other star studded nations.

The draw for the world cup will take place on December 4th, but for now here are the predicted seedings-these are not official, but merely what will probably happen. These 4 pots are divided into 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th seeds and 1 of each will go into each of the 8 groups...the seeding pots are done to avoid all European/All South American groups etc but are also based on the whole on ability...anyway let your imaginations run wild as to who your respective countries could draw...but just as a bit of a tease, the USA could end up in a group with the Ivory Coast, Portugal and Brazil!!! Hopefully that won't happen after the draw in 2006. I look forward to the draw. The link to the actual article should be above, but for anyone who doesn't want to go to the article, below is what the pot may well look like (I hate to say it but the USA look as though they will be in pot 4 again)...

Pot 1
  • Pot 2

Pot 4

Yeah, but since '94 FIFA has been pretty consistent with giving the host country a seed. They did it for France in '98, Korea and Japan in '02 and Germany in '04. Now I realize that France and Germany both earned it, but Korea and Japan? That's kind of similar to what is being done for SA.

I honestly do not recall Korea and Japan getting seeded.  And Germany and France actually deserved to be seeded outright.

Then that HAS to be a favor they are doing just for S Africa.  The USA didn't get such breaks in '94.

If you ask me, it makes no sense.  The automatic bid for the host is fine.  But taking the randomness out of the draw for the host?  That's weak.

It actually almost makes me hope the USA gets drawn in their group.  But you know what they say about being careful what you wish for...

FIFA wants the host country to have a great shot at getting to the knockout phase. Every major soccer news organization has been reporting South Africa as a #1 seed for several weeks, as far as I know.

I like the article, but I think that CONCACAF is going in Pot 3 and CONMENBOL is going in Pot 4. I just think FIFA wants the African sides to have a good shot to advance and that means drawing CONCACAF against Africa and not CONMENBOL.

Yeah, that would be the group of death two Cup's in a row for the US. I really think they have a good shot at getting in a group where they can have a legit shot at finishing 2nd and advancing.

Is pot 1 supposedly the #1-8 seeds?  Why would South Africa be seeded so high?  Their current ranking is 86!  And #17 in their federation.  They haven't done THAT well in the previous three World Cups.  Putting them as a top 8 seed is insane.

yes it is, or at least it's the top 7-South Africa just get in the top group automatically because they are the hosts. In 2006 it was not an issue because Germany were the hosts and would have been in the top group regardless, but in 2002 it was very controversial because Japan and South Korea were both put into pot 1, which for me is just a stupid decision as there is no way that South Africa have any kind of chance of winning the tournament so why put them in the top pot instead of Holland or Portugal??? It's confusing but then again Fifa often confuse me...
