The Fantasy Football Draft Lottery

Blog Photo - The Fantasy Football Draft LotteryLast year, my fantasy football league decided to try something new to spice up the fantasy offseason, when everyone is going through severe fantasy withdrawal, eager for football season to start up again. Our idea to spice things up was the Fantasy Football Draft Lottery. It's not the most important or meaningful event, but it's a good excuse to go out and have a couple beers with your friends on a weeknight.

Here's how it works:

It's based on the previous season's standings. Everyone's name is written on multiple slips of paper, which are folded and put into a bucket. Assuming a 10-team league, the person in last place has 15 slips put into the bucket, the person in 9th gets 14, etc., with the league champion having 6 slips.

You then go to your favorite nearby venue to draw the names. My personal preference is going to Hooters and having the waitress draw a name every time she comes by with more beer, but you may choose whatever venue you'd like.

When the first name is drawn, that person does not automatically get the first overall pick. The first pick is not always the best. I personally like to be in the 6-8 area so I can get an early second round pick as well. When the first name is drawn, that person gets to select whichever pick he wants. When the second name is drawn, that person gets to select from any of the picks remaining, and so on, until everyone knows where they are drafting.

As I said, the Fantasy Football Draft Lottery doesn't have a large impact on the outcome of the season, but what better stuff do you have to do at 8pm on a Wednesday? It's a fun time and helps dull the pain of waiting all summer for draft day, so just do it.
