Khlil Edney of New Rochelle High School may have hit one of the best buzzer beaters of all time. The senior center from New York hit a 55-foot shot to upset Mount Vernon in the Section 1 Class AA championship game.
With just 2.9 seconds left on the clock, New Rochelle turned the ball over to Mount Vernon, Mount Vernon turned the ball back over to New Rochelle, and it was Edney’s 55-footer released with .1 seconds left that won the game.
The sequence of events seemed so unlikely that the announcers were handing the victory to Mount Vernon while Edney’s Hail Mary was still in the air.
It was by far the best buzzer beater in basketball this year, whether at the high school, college, or pro-level.
"Sure, I've made half-court shots in practice, but nothing like this, not that far, not with one hand, not with the game on the line," Edney said. “I can’t believe it happened. I’m in shock right no. I just threw it up. I thought it was gonna bounce off the front rim, but it was all net. I couldn’t believe it.”
