The NFL Without A Salary Cap Could Be A Brave New World
READ MORE:
NFL, NFL
If you haven't already heard, there's a very real possibility that the NFL may not have a salary cap by the 2011 season.

Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones believes there is a good chance ownership will opt out of the current labor agreement with the NFL Players Association by the November 2008 deadline - which includes the salary cap.

Jones has not not give the Cowboys' opinion of the deal. But several owners, such as Denver's Pat Bowlen and New England's Robert Kraft, have expressed dissatisfaction.

Twenty-four of 32 votes would be needed to keep the collective bargaining agreement in place, and right now that doesn't seem like it's going to happen.

So we could have an NFL without a salary cap. I'm not sure whether to be excited or extremely worried. The NFL has an interesting revenue sharing model where it fairly evenly parcels out money the NFL generates to every team along with the cap. That's why a team like the Cincinnati Bengals can theoretically compete with the New York Giants and New York Jets - who have obvious major advantages.

However, if you suddenly let teams bid at will - some of which are unquestionably more wealthy than others - then the Bengals (along with a number of other teams) might literally never be relevant again.

Of course, that's only one thought. Many people would point to baseball and say that not having a salary cap doesn't harm the game. The Twins and A's have proved multiple times that you don't need a huge payroll to compete.

But they also haven't won a World Series any time recently.

Considering how wealthy some NFL owners are, I could easily see a guy like Jerry Jones assembling some kind of Pro Bowl squad. He's supposedly already trying to do that right now by trying to acquire Randy Moss.

I think the truth is, there's no way of knowing exactly what will happen. We'd likely see several teams who spend like the Yankees and Red Sox, and also several teams who spend frugally and draft wisely like the Twins and A's.

But for all that, we're probably even more likely to see certain teams become totally irrelevant - like say, the Saints, who play in a small market and can't generate anywhere near the extra revenue a team like the Giants could.

Regardless, it'll be real interesting to see what happens if the salary cap falls.

No salary cap in football = no Green Bay Packers

Be scared, be very scared.

The owners and players union have to figure it out. The owners think things are not fair. The power of the NFL is parity and the equality that has been created between the teams. You mess this the system then there will be teams start acting like the Royals and Pirates. Go ask those fans how that is going?

Also owners, it is a deal you came up with,so suck it. You are still all making billions. Maybe you can earn more money if you work something out with those bastards at the cable companies.

The Salary cap has been a good thing for the NFL. Sure there are some things they need to tweak to improve it, but that is for another time.

But has anyone learned ANYTHING from the other labor stoppages in sports.

It is tough for me to go against full length fur coat wear Mr. Bowlen. Pat has done a great job on the finance committee and negotiating the TV contracts, but he should spend more time telling Shanahan that he needs to stop wasting his cash on questionable dudes.

The sooner Shanny learns to develop his own talent the better off the Broncos will be.

I have not, but those both suck like chest wounds.

I mean we do not need to bring a not so motivated fat man to mile high (see Sam Adams). Also Foxworth does a decent job as the nickle and you can not have enough skiled DB's. The second one I dislike even more. I think this team has thrown away too many picks. Look if the Broncos are going to pick up a Jet, pick up Vilma.

I think the quality of play would be damaged a lot without a salary cap.  Hope they figure it out.

I do not want the NFL to turn in to the dump that is the MLB. I respect Rodger Goodell and think he will help straighten this out...

I certainly hope he does.

Roger, do not ruin what the NFL has become.

Was the NFL a dump before the salary cap was installed??? There wasn't even a cap before 1995 (i think that was the year) and the NFL was awesome- wasn't it. In fact- your own Pittsburgh Steelers won 4 Superbowls before the cap was installed- didn't they??? and how many different teams won Superbowls prior to 1995???? It might not be such a bad thing. The installation of the salary cap completely destroyed such awesome dynasties as the 49ers and Cowboys and hurt many other teams as well.

I hear alot of people say that the salary cap in the NFL helps out "small market" teams by leveling out the playing field.... But does it really do that?? Here are two examples to ponder; the Minnesota Vikings and Buffalo Bills have both made it to the Superbowl 4 times each prior to the salary cap.... They are both "small market" teams; and haven't even sniffed the Superbowl since the salary cap was installed. Sure the Vikes went to one NFC Championship game since the cap was installed but could you imagine how great that team may have become had they been able (no cap) to keep Moss and Culpepper together along with the rest of that team??????

Yeah, but you can't install a cap and then take it away. That would be total chaos. The NFL wasn't a dump but I am not concerned with that. That is the past. There wasn't 32 teams with the market we have today. With the salary cap every team has an equal shot and feels that they can win it every year. I just don't want the NFL to have poor low market teams like baseball where a single player is making more than and entire franchise. The same teams, year after year, would be competing for the Championship. That can be true for the NFL, but teams can rebound quicker with a cap. You have nothing to worry about. If the NFL doesn't have a cap in 2011 the Cowboys will be set. The Steelers have a rich history and the Rooney family but they are not a very rich team.

They never could've afforded it though.  Green Bay had to renovate Lambeau Field just so they could stay in Green Bay because they were struggling to keep up with the system as it is.  Without a salary cap there is no Green Bay Packers, and quite frankly at that point you might as well just dissolve the team.  The NFL is dead to me without a salary cap.

Actually, how many here remember the chaos of the day, with the old Plan B Free Agency drafts that went out? Back in the early 90s, players, some decent names, were getting swapped around like, well, trading cards.

The salary cap has it's good points, but it also has a few sticking points. For example, you have to watch how much money you have under the cap, which means, if you have 2 million dollars in wiggle room, don't call Randy Moss, he won't come. As well, it gives agents a point to contend with, saying, "Oh, my player has speed and talent, I think you guys could afford a bit more than that.

That, and ya, just like the Yankees, there's some clubs, with liquid capital, that would throw money everywhere, just to build the win-now club...Yep, look up how much Al Davis has stashed away. I don't know of many owners who aren't already millionaires....but while a few are frugal....but if the cap goes, you could bet it would turn into an auction for the best players....and yes, some clubs would find it hard to survive.

I can see it now, Christmas day 2010. The 12-1 Dallas Cowboys lead by Peyton Manning, LT, & Randy Moss travel to avenge their week 1 loss to the Tom Brady, Adrian Peterson & Terrell Owens undefeated Washington Redskins team.  Lord help us all!!!!!!!!
