November 20th, 1982 was the day Joe Starkey became a relevant name after bellowing "The Band is out the field!"
Today is the 25th anniversary of 'The Play' which doesn't need any further description, and thanks to the Internet writes Jakes Curtis we're still very familiar with each and every lateral of this play that will continue to live on.
I can't help but think that if this play were to happen today with Instant Replay, it would have never happened. Then again, this was the Pac-10, so they likely wouldn't have reviewed it anyway.
At the :20 mark, the knee is down. Stanford looks like a bunch of sore losers, the way they don't acknowledge the NCAA's decision, but the thing is...they're completely right.
Cal rolls out this footage for e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g. Every big game...every Stanford vs. Cal hoops game at Haas...even one of their 'university' commercials that is shown during timeouts has the footage. And everytime it's shown, Cal fans go crazy. I always laugh, but in reality it's pretty sad that the most recent positive sports thing to happen to them occurred 25 years ago. His knee was definitely down, but if they didn't have this they'd have to show hightlights from their last Rose Bowl win (in 1938), and I'd probably get motion sickness from having to watch that choppy, grainy 1930s footage over and over and over again.
