What is going on with Sammy Sosa? Let me preface this by admitting that Ive always had a soft spot for Sammy, through the corked bat incident(though I believe the media blew it out of proportion), his refusal to directly respond to steriod questions to Congress(I dont blame him though because it was a witch hunt), and I have even forgiven him for the way he left(I blame Dusty more for bungling that whole ugly season). I liked him because he always seemed sincere in his love and passion for baseball and you have to admit that he had a flair for entertaining. I think he was smart enough to understand the entertainment value of baseball. I honestly believe that if he hadnt been a baseball player, he wouldve made a great movie star. And if you knew how to handle him right, he would respond. I think the only manager who ever handled him the right way was Jim Riggleman and he knew enough to leave Sammy alone, and Sammy responded by having the best years of his career(like a wise man once said, you could look it up!). Don Baylor and Dusty Baker both blew it by trying to crack down on him when it was too late. But the purpose of this article is not to bash a couple of managers I never really cared for. Even in recent years, Ive managed to overlook his growing eccentricities: that abortive comeback, his presumptuous statements on his getting in the HOF(I can do a whole article on that alone, but thats for another time), but this latest bizarre chapter in Sosas life is really hard to fathom.
Sosa has been pictured with a creepily pale tone that puts people in mind of Michael Jackson. And Sammy has tried to dismiss the talk by claiming that it was the lighting......yeah, right! But at least he didnt try to claim that it was an obscure condition that no one ever heard of before. Even if it was the lighting, it is obvious that it has affected his skin tone and not in a good way. My concern is that Sammy Sosa seems headed down a similar bizarre path as Jacko. I just hope we dont see Sammy dangling a kid over a balcony or hear that he has suddenly dropped dead.
Like I said at the beginning of this article, I liked Sammy Sosa and enjoyed watching him play for the Cubs and I wish him the best in the future. Thats my story and Im sticking to it or rather thats my opinion and Im sticking to it.......
