Long time Pittsburgh Steelers radio broadcaster Myron Cope died this morning at the age of 79. Myron was battling various health problems.
Myron Cope was the Steelers color commentator on the one and only KDKA for 35 years (1970-2004). He is a member of the National Radio Hall of Fame and received the Pete Rozelle Radio and Television Award in 2005. His career goes back to 1951 when he was a writer for Sports Illustrated.
Myron is, however, is perhaps best known for creating the Terrible Towel in 1975. He encouraged fans to bring their yellow dish towels to a playoff game against the Baltimore Colts. The idea stuck and the Terrible Towel was born. Just about every member of the Steeler Nation possesses one. I know I have 4.
He is also known for his words and speech. His unique nasal voice, with a distinctive Pittsburgh area accent was the staple of Steelers broadcasting for 40 years. He used Yiddish phrases like, "Mmm-Hah, Okel Dokel, Feh, and Yoi." He also had a nickname for a player by the name of Jerome Bettis. The Bus.
Myron always gave back to the community though his Terrible Towel Foundations. He is a sports icon and will remain in the hearts of the Steeler Nation forever.
