The Whiff Index

The most swinging strikes induced by pitchers so far in 2009:

The Inducers
Pitcher Misses
Justin Verlander 325
Javier Vazquez 312
Tim Lincecum 299
Felix Hernandez 298
Rich Harden 298
CC Sabathia 287
Johan Santana 283
Chad Billingsley 282
Jon Lester 273
Dan Haren 273

The most swinging strikes among hitters in 2009:

The Inducees
Hitter Misses
Mark Reynolds 344
Ryan Howard 339
Carlos Pena 317
Russell Branyan 301
Chris Davis 257
Jack Cust 253
Miguel Olivo 245
Adam Jones 245
Alfonso Soriano 243

This can be viewed as a list of the pitchers with the filthiest/most confusing stuff and a list of the most aggressive hitters, or just the most wreckless ones.  The pitchers should be of no surprise, as these are pretty much the cream of the crop arms in baseball.  The list of hitters is fairly mixed, with the biggest surprise being that perennial strikeout "king" Adam Dunn is nowhere to be found.  But to no surprise, the list of hitters is made up primarily of some pretty decent Home Run hitters.

Chris Davis would be far atop this list but for one thing: He was demoted to Triple-A on July 5.

What a great shot of Lincecum.  I don't mind so much if run producers swing-and-miss a lot, but you better drive in 80 or more runs if you're going to leave runners in scoring position because you can't make contact.  So Ryan Howard is surely okay, but not most of the rest of them.

If you follow the Mets, sometimes Johan Santana actually hits better then David Wright over a period of time. It's ridiculously funny. Once, in the '08 season, David Wright went like 0-5 in a game while Santana went like 2-3 with a single and an RBI double. David Wright to me is overrated, I think he's a good player but please, he goes hitless at 20 at-bats every month and he usually just gets 15 RBIs in a month. These are some of the players I think that actually if not all the time play better then him.

  • Jeff Francouer
  • Daniel Murphy
  • Omir Santos
  • Johan Santana
  • Angel Pagan

Yes and it's understandable if you don't know who any of these players are but my point is that David Wright is considerably overated. If you disagree with me, then just make up an arguement to this and just message me. I hope you have learned something from this and that David Wright will get better over the next month or else Jerry Manuel should be scared of being fired from his job.

Probably shouldn't be a huge surprise that Dunn isn't in here because he also takes a lot of walks.  In other words, he isn't swinging all the time.
