Chevy Chase, in his role as Irwin M. Fletcher aka the eponymous Fletch, said "it takes a big man to admit when he's wrong. I am not a big man."
Well, neither am I. Yesterday I acknowledged that Tiger was slightly off this week and predicted he would finish at just 4 under par and win The Masters by only one shot as the rest of the field choked its way to defeat. I was almost right. Tiger continued to be slightly off, finished at 5 under and came in second as only Trevor Immelman managed to maintain his nerves. Barely.
But at least I was not as wrong as Nick Faldo when he pondered, as Tiger began his final nine, whether "he might have a sixth gear and be able to finish at ten under." Ten under? Oh Nick, ten under? Did you really say ten under? Like that was the score it would take to win. I wonder if Faldo knew better and just wanted to avoid belittling the other players. Or whether he was drunk. He does have his own wine label and produces a bold yet supple merlot.
Anyway, congratulations to Trevor Immelman. Enjoy what will surely be your only major championship.
