Despite the Freeh Report revealing that former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno played a huge role in covering up Jerry Sandusky's child sex crimes for over a decade, the statue of Paterno will remain prominently displayed on campus. To most folks, Paterno's stellar record on the field doesn't mean quite as much as it used to, now that it's known that he enabled a monster for years on end.
Previous to these revelations, the statue seemed a fitting honor to a man who had run a successful football program for decades without even a hint of impropriety.
Now, it's a slap in the face to the dozens (and maybe more) who were assaulted by Sandusky while Paterno turned a blind eye, and even actively prevented school officials from notifying the authorities.
This is just another example of why the problem really hasn't been fixed at Penn State.
The reason Sandusky was allowed to continue raping children for so long was the hero worship that occurred there, giving Paterno and the football program an air of invincibility.
Despite everything we now know about what happened, the statue remains.
As long as this culture of idolizing athletic figures exists, there is still the possibility of another Sandusky. Let's hope I'm wrong, but I'm not holding my breath.

oh there are a few I could tell but out of having a shred of human conscious for those poor victims I will refrain as well! My heart goes out to the victims.

It's an absolute disgrace. The students at Penn State should get their act together and request that the statue be removed. You would think that the school would want to do it too. It only stands as a reminder to Sandusky's horrors.

I just thought of a great Penn State joke, but I think I'll wait 14 years to tell it.

being silent in the face of what was going on is akin to condoning it. truly sad he chose to try to cover this up. Or just turn his head and ignore it.
