Welcome to another edition of FanIQ's weekend wrap-up. It was another quiet week for the so-called "minor sports," mostly due to a dark weekend in auto racing. F1, IndyCar, and Champ Car were all off this weekend, and NASCAR (which this segment doesn't cover anyway) was rained out. However, there was still some things you might have missed, particularly on the tennis court.Tennis: Roger Federer blitzed James Blake 6-1, 6-4 to win the Masters Series event in Cincinnati. The win was Federer's 50th career title. For Blake though, this run to the final was a much needed confidence booster in what has been a difficult season. Still, the US Open starts in two weeks, and the contenders start and end with Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic (with Roddick a distant fourth).
On the women's side, Justine Henin reminded everyone why she is ranked #1, defeating Jelena Jankovic in the finals of the Rogers Cup. The women's Open should be more competitive than the men's, but by my count, there are still only seven that could win: Henin, the Williams sisters (if they show), Sharapova, Mauresmo, Jankovic, and Ivanovic.
Golf: There are good spots to be on the PGA Tour calendar, and there are bad spots. The week between the PGA Championship and the start of the FedEx Cup is not a good spot. Someone had to win this week's Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, and that person was Brandt Snedeker. Snedeker earned his first career victory with a final round 63.
Gymnastics: 15 year old Shawn Johnson won the women's all-around at the US Championships. CF's new
Little League World Series: I only mention this because it has officially taken over ESPN. Is it just me, or does it get longer every year?
And that was the weekend that was.
