Week 2 of the Arena Football League season is complete, and now we move on to Week 3 after a quick recap of the Week 2 action.
Week 2 started out with a shootout on Thursday night. Grand Rapids surrendered a lead and Las Vegas took the victory 79-69.
On Friday, New Orleans fans came out in full force for their first home game in 2 seasons. The team rewarded them for their loyalty, taking the win against Columbus. New Orleans will most likely play as if they are an expansion team on the road, but with that crowd behind them, they will be tough to beat at home. In other Friday action, Philadelphia whipped Nashville 63-30, and Chicago got their first win in their campaign to defend their AFL title in a close game against the tough San Jose Sabercats.
Saturday's action saw Dallas move to 2-0 in convincing fashion vs. Tampa Bay. In yet another shootout in the desert, the Rattlers fell to Utah 75-71. Colorado defeated Kansas City 44-40. It looks as if Kansas City's rushing attack was indeed a one-hit-wonder, as the Brigade were held to a more traditional AFL total of 18 rushing yards.
In the one Sunday game last week, Georgia edged Austin 60-51.
Finally, last week saw this season's debut of Monday Night Arena Football. Fans were treated to some extra action, as Los Angeles got a tough road win down in Orlando. The Predators had a 14 point 4th quarter comeback, including the game tying touchdown with 7 seconds left, but were unable to finish L.A. off.
Those are all the recaps, let's move on to this week's Super 7, which as usual was picked by you, the fans. Each team listed has their record next to their name, as well as their gain or loss in the rankings from the previous week.
Arena Football League Super 7 - After Week 2
7 (tie). Austin Wranglers (1-1) Down 4 spots & Orlando Predators (1-1) Down 5 spots
As expected, we had a big shakeup in the rankings this week. Austin and Orlando both suffered their first losses of the season, and both fell to #7 in the rankings. In Week 3, these two teams face off. The loser will ignominously fall from the Super 7.
6. Las Vegas Gladiators (1-1) Up 7 spots
Scoring 79 points in a game gets you a big bump in the rankings. Shaun King is the real deal as an AFL quarterback. If he's using this as a springboard back to the NFL, he could be back in the league soon, much to the chagrin of the Vegas fans.
5. Chicago Rush (1-1) Up 12 spots
The defending champions returned to the rankings after getting their first win of the year. San Jose was a tough opponent, but they should easily move to 2-1 since they play New York in Week 3.
4. Philadelphia Soul (1-0) Up 6 spots
Philadelphia looked great in their first game of the season as they beat Nashville easily. Next up: Grand Rapids.
I'm going to keep the intermission short this week. I want to get back to watching the NCAA tournament just as much as you do. That Suns/Mavs game last night was fantastic. I was very glad to see the Suns prove that they can go into Dallas and get a win. This year's Western Conference playoffs should be great. What a great tip-off to what should be a great weekend of basketball. Don't forget about this week's Arena Football League games though!
Back to the Super 7...
3. Utah Blaze (2-0) Up 4 spots
Another week, another win, another climb up the rankings. Danny White is a coaching legend in the AFL, and he has this team playing well.
2. Georgia Force (2-0) Up 4 spots
Just like Utah, Georgia's 2nd straight win to start off the season moves them up the rankings. In Week 3, Georgia faces a reeling Tampa Bay team that will be looking to avoid going 0-3.
1. Dallas Desperados (2-0) #1 team for 3rd consecutive week
Dallas continues to impress. They received 29 of 36 first place votes in this week's poll after their 59-40 win vs. Tampa Bay. The Desperados travel to KC this week. It will be a bit more of a challenge for them, but if they are as good as they appear to be, they should have no problems. Enjoy this week's Dallas cheerleader photo!
That's it for This Week in the AFL! Check back next Thursday for a recap of this week's action and a preview of the Week 4 games.
