Today is one of the biggest days on the football calendar and I know you have been looking forward to This Week in Arena Football for months. What other football-related event is more important? I can't think of a single one.
We'll start by diving into the recaps. The biggest news of the week was Georgia knocking off Dallas. Dallas had been the last undefeated team in the league, which means the '72 Miami Dolphins can now drink their champagne.
In other games, Arizona shocked me, as well as the Utah Blaze. Columbus won once again, holding the suddenly sucktastic Philadelphia team to just 21 points. San Jose, Orlando, Colorado, Chicago, Nashville and Austin were also winners.
Arena Football League Super 7 - After Week 8
7. Philadelphia Soul (4-3) Down 2 spots
Philadelphia is in a very bad place. Their starting QB is hurt. They've lost 3 straight games. And now they play the defending AFL champs this week. Philly sports fans should be used to collapses like this though, no?
6. Columbus Destroyers (4-3) Up 3 spots
Don't let their 4-3 record fool you, as I have said before, this is a pretty good team. They are playing well right now & the schedule gets easier now, as they face Tampa Bay this week.
5. Utah Blaze (5-3) Down 1 spot
Last week I said that there should have been a 20 point spread in the Utah/Arizona game. I was almost right about that, I just got the team wrong.
4. Colorado Crush (5-3) Up 3 spots
A win against Las Vegas got Colorado a huge jump in the Super 7. This week they face Kansas City, but I think they should be able to win a close one, say 45-42 or something like that.
Chicago Rush head coach Mike Hohensee was hit by a car while walking through a grocery store parking lot on Friday. Fortunately he was not seriously hurt, but it is unknown whether he will be able to coach the team on Monday. Here's hoping he makes a speedy recovery.
Back to the Super 7...
3. Chicago Rush (6-1) No change
Another week, another win. Chicago won't be able to surprise teams in the playoffs this year - everyone will be gunning for them this time around and I doubt they will have a 7-9 record that allows them to fly under the radar.
2. Dallas Desperados (7-1) Down 1 spot
For the first time this season, we see Dallas in a position other than #1. Georgia took care of business last week, winning the #1 vs #2 matchup 78-63. They'll still be okay though. My guess is that the two teams will see each other at some point in the playoffs this year. By the way, Dallas stopped their losing streak at one, winning their game vs Nashville Friday night.
1. Georgia Force (7-1) #1 team for 1st week
Georgia is your new #1! And you all know what that means... we finally get to see another team's cheerleader! Georgia has already played their Week 9 game, winning down in New Orleans, so we'll probably see another next week. Maybe I can find a photo that doesn't look like it was taken with a DMV camera. Invest in better equipment, Georgia!
That's it for This Week in the AFL! Check back next Friday for a recap of this week's action and a preview of the Week 10 games.
