NASCAR Drivers attack the Lady in Black for Friday AND Saturday night racing

Blog Photo - This Week in NASCAR [May 10th edition]They call her the Lady in Black.  She is, perhaps, the most famous racetrack on the NASCAR circuit.  Some may say Daytona, Talladega or Bristol are more famous, but Darlington is the track that true NASCAR fans can really relate to.  The Southern 500 was traditionally run on Labor Day Weekend and was a favorite of drivers, their families and their fans.  It gave everyone the chance to get back to Saturday night racing, the kind of small town racing many of us grew up with.  The Spring race was run on Memorial Day weekend, and was first known as the Rebel 300.

If you are waiting for the one race that will make you a NASCAR fan again, Darlington could be the one.  It's a favorite of good ol' DW, or Darrell Waltrip, given that he won here, just a few times.  Dale Earnhardt Sr. won here a lot, as did Bill Elliott, Dale Jarrett and Sterling Marlin.  In fact, in one of the races here, won by Dale Sr., his best friend, Neil Bonnett was seriously injured and missed the following three years of racing.  However, more recently, the Fords of Jack Roush have been successful, particularly Greg Biffle.  Last year it was first time winner, Regan Smith, who took the checkers.  And in 2003, Kurt Busch and Ricky Craven battled it out to the very end, where the closest finish in NASCAR was recorded.  Ricky Craven beat out Kurt by .002 seconds.

If you are fan of Tony Stewart and agreed with his "interview" after the Talladega race, this is the track that may just restore your faith in NASCAR.  It may not be Tony's week, but short of a figure 8 track, it may be the best we'll see this year.

Yep, I know.  I've said that a lot this year.  In fact, I think I've said it almost every weekend (except California).  The thing is, the track is a great track to race on.  Drivers can be almost guaranteed to get a "Darlington Stripe" on the "track too tough to tame".  Yes, the track is just that good that it has a whole slew of nicknames.  And because the racing is close and intense, tempers fly here.  You think Talladega gets drivers (ahem, Danica, ahem) pissed off at their co-competitors, just wait until someone gets a Darlington stripe....with a little help.

Better even, is the fact that it is night racing.  NASCAR has traditionally refrained from racing on Mother's Day, a tradition I have always disliked immensely, as I can't think of anything I'd rather do than watch a race on Mother's Day.  However, at least we have one on Saturday night, and the Nationwide Race on Friday night, so we get our fun, and we get our Mother's Day as well.

Blog Photo - This Week in NASCAR [May 10th edition]Now before we get to who your picks are going to be, I have to pass on that unfortunately, we will not see Eric McClure in his car this weekend.  McClure suffered a concussion in last weekend's race and has not been cleared by doctors to race yet.  Jeff Green will fill in for him.  At this point, those of us who are also hockey fans know how devastating a concussion can be to a player's, or a driver's, career.  Get well, Eric, you're in our prayers.

No practice sessions have been run yet, and I'll be at work when they run tomorrow.  I will be home in time for the Nationwide race, though, so will make my picks then.

Don't forget the Sprint All Star Race is coming up soon.  The fan vote may be the only way for some of the drivers to get in the race, so if you have a favorite driver who hasn't won a race, get on the site and cast your vote.

Dale Jr is pretty confident he will not need the fan vote to get into the All Star Race.  One thing is certain, he is running so well this year, and has improved on every single track.  He has improved so much that winning really shouldn't be the focus.  If he keeps up the way he is running he will win a race, sooner rather than later.

So, are you ready to make your picks for the races? Don't forget to hit up the game pages and earn some Q bucks and we'll see you Saturday night!

Impressed so far by Danica. 225 laps in and completely uneventful.  That's a great thing for your second career start at Darlington.

Never seen one driver have as much bad luck as Gordon has this year.  Its just absurd.

Jeff Gordon has been snake bitten so far these year, now has something that broke on his car.

I just turned the race on and Jeff Gordon's comical season continues. He had a left rear flat tire.

Dave Blaney picked up the commitment cone on his pit entry, penalty for Dave.  Johnson gets the lead and still caution free.

Green flag stops complete and Shrub is the new leader.  Biffle has been in control early and the race has been caution free so far.

Jeff Gordon just got a Darlington stripe that may be more than just a stripe.

I feel bad I didn't see this until now or I would've thrown a live thread up.  Let's go racing in NASCAR's original super speedway race, the Southern 500!

I have to work today, and don't have enough time to put up a live thread, so this will have to do.  I'll post a recap of the weekend tonight, hopefully.
