Dale Earnhardt Jr back in the car at Martinsville

Blog Photo - This Week in NASCAR [October 26th Edition]Dale Earnhardt Jr is like a kid in a candy store today.  And maybe he is.  After two weeks out of the car due to a concussion, Dale Earnhardt Jr was cleared to race earlier this week, and the joy that can be heard in his voice while talking to his crew is unmistakable.

As practice is underway on the track Michael McDowell is the fastest and Dale Jr isn't in the top ten but that doesn't seem to be bothering him one bit.  He is communicating with this crew, letting them know exactly how the car is operating, what he needs and what information he needs from his crew.

Regan Smith drove the 88 during the two weeks that Jr was off, and it was actually Jr who was insistent upon Regan being in his seat.  Regan performed up to Jr's expectations in the car, and on the same day that the announcement was made that Jr would return came the announcement that Regan Smith will drive for Jr next year in the Nationwide Series, full time.   Regan will sit in the number 5 car and will run for the Championship.  Although the move was predicted, it's great to see it come to fruition.  I wish Regan all the best.

If you watched the race last weekend on the newly reconfigured, repaved Kansas Speedway, you saw Danica Patrick try to take out the 83 of Landon Cassill, and fail.  The two were racing hard and Landon gave Danica a little rub on the track, a move that looked like a "back off" reminder.  Danica took offence to the move and turned into the rear quarter panel of the 83.  Landon spun, but was able to gather up the car and continue.  Danica?? Well, the move turned her into the wall and took her out of the race.  Almost everyone has been critical of Danica for the move, including her owner, Tony Stewart.  Tony spun on the track just a few laps after Danica but didn't hit anything.  His comment on the mic?? [sic] "There ya go, Danica, that's how to spin a car and not hit anything."

She might be trying to "stick up for herself" but intentionally wrecking another driver is not the way to do so.

While the Cup series is a tight race to the Championship, the Truck series is even closer.  Ty Dillon has a single point lead over James Buescher and the two series will continue to race side by side right to Homestead.   In the Nationwide Series, Ty's big brother, Austin, is in the thick of things, but Elliott Sadler continues to lead the points.  That series has the weekend off.

I want to see practice tomorrow evening after the truck race before I make my pick for Sunday's race, so I'll close this session with saying that I am happy FOX has signed to continue broadcasting NASCAR races.  As I live in Canada, FOX is the only station that actually broadcasts NASCAR in all its glory.  TSN is the affiliate for the other stations in Canada, and they show Canadian content, meaning we get very few of the NASCAR commercials, and miss out on many of the segues the other stations indulge in.  I thank SPEED, however, for showing me the Tony Stewart/Lewis Hamilton commercials.  A person has to get some entertainment somewhere.

Just call me an ostrich.....I had my head in the sand regarding JJ.  Our household is hoping for Bad Brad, so no one here was happy with that result.

I'll learn....eventually...

Well there is that then...Brad actually has a chance, if he can win.

So Sam Hornish Jr hits the 99 of Carl Edwards, who in turn hits Dale Jr.

Jr and Flipper have to pit for tires, basically taking away any chance for the win as there are only a handful of laps left.  Hornish Jr, of course, continues on.

Denny is behind 30+ laps, and now Kevin Harvick has had his engine expire with 20 laps to go.

Kes stays on the track while the rest of the field pits.

Cleanup on the track will take a bit because of the oil the 29 left on track

Dale Jr stayed out with Kes.

Now my heart is pounding............

After making his way up close to the front, Denny Hamlin has some kind of issue = car won't stay running - he brought out the caution and is now in 33rd - not sure if he is back on track or not

I'm loving seeing Jr up in the top 5! Three of HMS cars have been consistently in the top 5 today.  Clint Bowyer looking strong as well.

Oh, and Denny got penalized again for speeding on pit road.....

Brian Vickers to the lead, but Kyle didn't get tires last pit stop, and he just spun on the track, bringing out the caution.  Bet he can't wait to get tires now!

Interesting to see the pit strategy - some pitted last caution, the rest pitting this caution.  could set up for an interesting finish to the race....

Dale Jr is up to 7th after 55 laps.  JJ (grrr) leads, with Kyle on his tail.  but Jeff is right behind him

Denny Hamlin got caught speeding on pit road (snicker) and is in 30th.

Like that

The last Sprint cup practice is underway, and Brian Vickers in the 55 car is second fastest.  He's in his last ride of the season for MWR in this car which has been up front nearly every race, no matter who is driving it.

Next year will see the same seat configuration, with Mark driving 24 races, Brian in the seat for 9 and Mikey himself in the car for 3 - the Talladega races and the July Daytona race.

And sadly, Jimmie Johnson is on the pole again at Martinsville, meaning the race could be a snoozefest if he is strong enough to stay up front.  Oh well, we can keep our eyes on Dale Jr.
