Eurys out, AJ in, and the Chase continues

Blog Photo - This Week in NASCAR [September 21st Edition]The first Chase Race ran at Chicagoland was just another example of the kind of luck Jeff Gordon has had this year - nothing but bad.  One is reminded of Dale Earnhardt Sr.'s efforts to win the Daytona 500.  He ran out of gas, got a flat tire, hit a seagull..........the list goes on and on.

Jeff has had just that kind of luck, and all in one year.  Last week it was stuck throttle, which stuck at about half throttle, but was enough to send Jeff into first the wall, and second, the garage for repairs.  By the time the repairs were completed and Jeff got back out on the track, he couldn't do any better than 35th. That finish put Jeff 47 points behind leader Brad Keselowski.

Denny Hamlin also had some bad luck, running out of gas on the last lap.  Matt Kenseth?? Yep, he had bad luck too.

Our Cup standings look a heckuva lot different than they did at the end of the regular season. Greg Biffle is way down in 8th.  Brad Keselowski is the leader, with Jimmie Johnson hot on his heels.

And Tony Stewart?  Well Smoke is sitting in 3rd.  And all that is while he has so many other things going on.  Not only did the Army decide not to sponsor Ryan Newman's car next year, but Office Depot is departing the 14 car.  And Danica? Well, she's moving up to Cup for Stewart-Haas, and no one knows if SHR is ready for her, or if she is ready for Cup.  I don't know about you, but if I were Smoke, I wouldn't be getting much sleep.

Then again, maybe being on the track is therapy for Tony.

Then there's Dale Earnhardt Jr.  He sits in 7th in points, but JR Motorsports is making some tough decisions of their own.  Cole Whitt and Danica aren't having the season the JR executives had hoped for, and some tough changes have been made.  First to go was Tony Eury Sr., or "Pops".  He was key to Jr's success back in the early years, and has mentored Danica through her move from IndyCar to NASCAR.  But, he was ousted a couple of weeks ago, as the team changed direction.  This week it was his son, Tony Jr. who was on the chopping block.

I have a problem with that.

I don't think the "problem" was the Eurys.  I don't think Danica is all that.

Yes, the girl can drive, but she just ain't that good.  With that, I will shut up.  I just don't want to make this article about her.

This week the teams are at New Hampshire, a challenging short track that is tough on tempers.   Kes has to be a favorite this weekend as well, and he very well could have the type of playoff season Tony Stewart enjoyed last year.  Nothing would make Penske happier.

And finally, speaking of Penske, you may have read earlier this week that AJ Allmendinger has been reinstated by NASCAR.  It was, perhaps, the shortest Road to Recovery anyone has encountered in NASCAR so far.  It goes to show how serious AJ was about the process.  I'm happy for him, but I don't believe he will be back in a NASCAR ride any time too soon.  He is going to have a very long road back and will have to prove to everyone that he really wants to be here, wants to drive and is willing to abide by the rules.  I just hope he can do that.

Personally speaking, you missed little. I had the privilege of being there in person and that race was a snore-fest. Denny had the field whipped. They threw cautions it seemed just to make sure he didn't win by laps. I would like to implore Bruton Smith to do something with this track to make passing and racing a reality.

Loudon has been like that for years.  I remember Ernie Irvan winning his comeback race by 2?? laps? I have it recorded, so I should watch it to be sure, but I believe you.

It was even more disappointing that Denny won sad

Well, that was a huge disappointment.  I was working, catching what I could of the race, and with about 30 laps to go a group of teachers came in off the golf course to have lunch.  They demanded the channel be changed to show CFL football.......in the second quarter.  So the boss changed it, then they didn't even watch it.  They didn't tip hardly at all - $4 on a $60 bill, and by the time they left, the race was over and all I got to see was Denny :(

By the way, I am STOKED to see Johanna Long finished (12th) ahead of Danica, who finished 14th with her "new" crew chief.

MEOW!!

So I am off to work for my last day at the golf course this season/  I WILL have the race on in the clubhouse, but won't be able to comment here :(

Feel free to post thoughts, though, and I'll check in when I get home.

Gooooooo Jr!!!!

I have no problem with Brad, oddly enough, considering my strong dislike of Denny LOL I know others who can't stand Brad but think Denny is wonderful...go figure. How about you? Brad work for you?

Oddly enough he does. I like the kid, a lot. Not sure if its his goofy smile or the way he handles himself. Of course, I have seen flashes of behavior I wonder about. Right mentor would fix that though I am sure.  You know, they, Brad and Denny are alike in many ways, differences are really few, Denny is just thrown out there more than Brad. I'm a Joe Gibbs fan, doesn't mean I care for all his drivers. I don't like Penske, but like most of his drivers. Go Figure.

Yep, I agree. How do we feel about Brad being the Champion? I know you don't like Denny. Everyone is tired of Jimmie. New blood going to reign this year?

Me neither, Jen, and I don't think right now that we will see a clear favorite any time soon, unless BK wins again, then momentum may be everything!!
