HP - Angel Hernandez, 1B - Derryl Cousins, 2B - Chad Fairchild, and 3B - Mark Carlson ... thank you. That's how you umpire a baseball game.
No overreactions. Just let both teams take care of their business and make sure the situation didn't get too far out of hand. This is the way baseball was intended to be played.
You can debate whether Alex Rodriguez "Ha!" deserved a fastball to the leg, but I have no problem with Josh Towers throwing inside and making sure he connected. That's baseball. We've seen far too many games where the home plate umpire instantaneously ejected the pitcher. Angel Hernandez warned both benches which was necessary. Moments after, Matt Stairs (yes, him of all people) had some unresolved beef with A-Rod and wasn't finished. Situation could have been worse, but the umpires were there and defused the skirmish. No emotionally charged ejections, no overreaction, simply letting the teams take care of their business.
In the 7th inning Roger Clemens who was soon to exit, threw a fastball square into the back of Alex Rios. Both sides had been warned, thus Roger and Torre could hit the showers. Well played.
Thank you, that's how you umpire a baseball game.
