Who Will Win the Latest Round of Football's Oldest Rivalry [Bears-Packers Thursday Night Football Live Thread]
Tonight's matchup is a good one, as the league's oldest rivalry meets for the 185th time: the Bears at the Packers at Lambeau.
With Week 1 always being a Jump to Conclusions week, this game will start the process of finding out how much of each team's Week 1 performance was real. The Bears looked good in easily dispatching the Colts, particularly the Jay Cutler to Brandon Marshall pairing. However, Indianapolis was 2-14 last year, and Andrew Luck notwithstanding, are just beginning a long rebuild. Conversely, the Packers looked flat against San Francisco, and were never realistically in position to win. The defense was gashed both by the Niners running game and Alex Smith. However, the Niners were in the NFC title game last year, and could easily be even better this year.
If the Bears win, it will be another data point that this is a Super Bowl contending team (*pauses to throw up in mouth*). If the Packers win, it will show that they shouldn't be buried just yet. It won't be easy though. Chicago has a physical defense that Green Bay's vaunted offense has shown to struggle against recently, and in breaking news, the Pack will be without Greg Jennings. Expect to see even more of Randall Cobb than even last week, where he was about the only Packer to play well. Defensively the Packers will have to play better, and since Cutler is a better quarterback than Smith....
My pick is Green Bay for obvious reasons, but I can't say I feel that confident about it. Last week was worrisome, and I'm afraid whatever positive fan karma I have is going to the Orioles.
Kickoff is around 8:20 on NFL Network. Q it up here throughout the game.
