The last time Tiger Woods was on the South Course at Torrey Pines, he delighted us with some clutch putts on the 18th hole to eventually defeat Rocco Mediate to win the US Open. On Monday his job was much different.
Imagine hearing this as you approach the 1st hole:
"Hey, I hear you're looking for a caddie. I'm Tiger Woods, pleased to meet you."
This was how 59-year-old John Abel was greeted yesterday at Torrey Pines, as Woods was making good on his "Tee It Up With Tiger" Sweepstakes.
Woods apparently showed no signs of a limp or any pain, but two two used a custom Buick golf cart and Tiger didn't exactly carry his bags. However, he did enjoy being on the other side of the game:
"It was fun. This was totally cool. I've caddied before many times. For me to be out here and to be able to do it again, it's always fun. John's a good guy. It was a fun day for me."
There was also the irony of Woods getting to stay Sunday night right off of the 18th green.
"I opened the curtains and saw the 18th green. I was like, 'You know what? That is pretty cool.' A different atmosphere. You can actually see. They don't have the grandstands in the way. I saw where the pin was and was thinking, 'You know what? I remember that putt.'"
Mr. Abel, you sir are a lucky man.
