The Tigers figured to be over the hump after sweep the Yankees in New York. Not so much. After scoring six runs in the 1st inning Sunday, Detroit's pitchers still had to get the job done, something they've struggled to do all season. However, it's not the pitching that has Leyland pissed off.
Leyland said he's as shocked as we are about the offensive inconsistencies, and promised some big changes before tonight's game in Boston.
"Same pieces, but quite a bit different (in the order they hit)," Leyland said. "I think you'll find it pretty drastic."My suggestion? Just for one week replace your bullpen with the staff in Toledo. That should prove a point. In regards to the hitting? Hey, I didn't sign Jacque Jones.
Twins 7, Tigers 6
NL MVP? Chipper Jones It's a little early but I hope everyone is taking note of how ridiculous Chipper has been this season. Just turned 36, Jones is on pace for a career best year. Three more hits against the Reds Sunday lifting his MLB-best batting average to .425, and five more RBIs. Chase Utley can have his home runs, but no one's having a better year than Chipper.
Roy Havaday Somehow Halladay is 3-4 this season. Somehow = team fails to hit when he pitches. Roy had 4 straight complete game outings and managed to win just one. Sunday he broke the trend, pitching just 7 1/3 ... more importantly also getting the win. Blue Jays 4, White Sox 3.
Best NL Central Race: Blown Saves The NL Central figured to be a battle between the Brewers and Cubs, both pushing 90 wins. The Cardinals have been a big surprise thanks to some impressive starting pitching ... AND thanks to the battle of blown saves between Kerry Wood and Eric Gagne. The latter of which blew his 5th on Sunday. Astros 8, Brewers 6.
Any other thoughts from over the weekend or suggestions on how Leyland can trade for Alan Trammel and Kirk Gibson, feel free to share them here.
