Torii Hunter is the first free agent domino to fall this year, after signing a 2-year deal with the Tigers for a total of $26M.Last year with the Angels, Hunter hit .313 with 16 HR and 92 RBI. His OPS was .817, slightly above his career average, and had a pretty solid season overall.
Despite Hunter's decent numbers in 2012, it's not an open-and-shut case that this was a good move for them.
Hunter is 37 years old right now, and definitely on the tail end of his career. While his bat will certainly help the Tigers' lineup, along with the return of Victor Martinez, will it really help enough to make him worth $13M per year?
Depending on what else the Tigers do this winter, this might be a move that handcuffs them in their efforts to acquire someone else.
Hunter is a solid player and by all reports, he's great in the clubhouse as well. Still, is he worth $26M over two years? I'm not convinced.
