The Braves won last night, but it was an incredibly costly win as their starting pitcher Tim Hudson went down in the 8th inning with a broken ankle
Hudson was covering first base when Mets outfielder Eric Young Jr. stepped on his ankle trying to stretch for first base. Hudson's ankle immediately twisted and collapsed under Young's weight, and it was apparent that he was in a lot of pain.
He was carted off the field, and now the only question is whether or not he'll pitch again at all this year.
Here's an animated GIF of the injury, for those with strong stomachs. Warning: It's gruesome.
Young is pretty upset about his role in the incident
, and spoke to reporters after the game:
"I saw his foot as I’m going for the base right there in the middle, and as I came down, I knew I didn’t get any of the base. I knew I got all of his foot. I pretty much knew it was broke right when I did it. That’s why I ran back to him and tried to console him as much as I could and to apologize. I apologized to him, told him it was an accident. I obviously wasn’t trying to hurt him on the play. He just told me to keep my head up and keep playing the game the hard way, the right way. He said there was nothing I can do about it. That made me feel somewhat better, but still bummed that he’s going to be out for a while."
