Tim Tebow Is Angry At Doubters And Further Proof That Egos Run Sports.
Egos Are Necessary In Sports, Even For Guys Like Tim Tebow
Recently, Tim Tebow's true abilities have come under question. A lot of people have stated that he has no NFL future and others have pointed out that he wasn't a worthy Heisman contender. Of course, the Gator and Tebow fans have come to his defense and think he'll be a great pro player (in some form) and that he should have won the Heisman. Until recently, no one had really known how Tebow felt about this.

Thanks to a recent College Football Talk report, we now know. ESPN's Joe Schad recently talked to the Tebow himself, and apparently Tebow is angry that people don't think he is going to be a great NFL quarterback and also angry that he didn't win the Heisman. In some sort of retaliation, Tebow might leave Florida a year early to try to prove his doubters wrong.

The fact that Tebow is so angry about this is really quite laughable. Tebow's NFL prospects could be described at best as being grim. He has a slow release, throws rainbow passes, and really isn't that accurate. Guys like that get eaten up by NFL defenses. Throw a rainbow pass against an NFL defense and a safety will pick it off just about every time. He can get away with it in the college because there are only about 128 NFL safeties and there are many far less talented safeties in college football. As for the Heisman, while Tebow did have himself a nice season, it was a bit of a joke that he even got invited to the ceremony. There were five guys (Sam Bradford, Colt McCoy, Graham Harrell, Michael Crabtree, and Shonn Greene) this year in college football who stood out from the rest and none of them were named Tebow. What this has proven, is that even a guy like Tebow has a huge ego.

Now, this wasn't written to rip on Tebow. Everyone who is good in sports has an ego and it isn't a bad thing. Truth is, in order to make it to a high level in sports you must think and believe that you are indeed that good. We often like to believe that only guys who annoy us, like Allen Iverson or Plaxico Burress, are ego driven, but in reality all these star athletes are. Even Tebow, who is constantly shoved down our throats as what is everything that is good in sports (and he really does represent the good in sports.)

So the next time some moron tries to say that some guy with a huge ego is what is wrong with sports today, just remember that all guys in sports have egos. Even Tim Tebow, the guy who spent his spring break in the Philippines helping with circumcisions. Without those egos, none of those guys would be playing at the high level they achieve and our sports world wouldn't be nearly as interesting as it currently is.

Why is it that other than the hearsay at the college football talk link, there seems to be no evidence whatsoever of this Joe Schad interview?  Can't find it anywhere.

There is a reference to it here at the bottom.  Also, I believe this may have been a television report.

I see the link, but there is nothing along the lines of a quote about being angry about the Heisman or NFL prospects.  Don't know the guy, but for two years in the media spotlight, he has never made any kind of comments like that, and he's been deliberately circumspect about whether he's leaving Florida.  This just doesn't seem quite right.

sorry, meant to say he's never made any comments like that about anything.

Thanks so much for this article.  Tim Tebow is a flawed human being like the rest of us.  Noone enjoys being the symbol for all that is good more than Gomer Gator.

I respect all that he has achieved, but his friends and family should help him to see the big picture.  The longer he stays in college the further away he is from those bad men who are going to knock him silly in the NFL.

I think you are wrong that it is ego.. it's competitivness.

And the players in the NFL are afraid of Tebow..not the other way around. people said Tebow would never be able to play in the SEC too.... WHOOPS

Tebow's career stats

TD -INT is 65 to 9
completion % 66.1
Passer rating 183.64
Yards 6,159
Yeah these are the stats of an inaccurate QB. Oh by the way he also has 43 rushing TDs that's 108 total for those of you who can't count.

Just because he does not throw for 5000 yards and 40+ TD every year or that he doesn't trow the tightest spiral does not mean he will suck in the NFL that's just plain dumb. To the guy who said he doesn't have an arm please don't make anymore posts there for people who actually have a brain, and heyhey there has only been one perfect person to walk this world and Tebow would be the first person to tell you who that person was and that it sure the hell wasn't him.

You're damn right he is pissed and that Gator fans are coming to his defense. You know damn well that if you were in his shoes and people were just writing you off without even giving you a shot that you would be madder then hell and want to prove them wrong  if you did not think that way you would have no business playing a sport to begin with, and you know damn well that  all of you including you Big 12 fans would love to have him on your team one way or another and if he were and people were saying what all of your are saying you would be all fired up like we are, so stop calling us Gomer or homer or daydreamers or what ever,  you would be doing the same things if the tables were turned

Those stats are impressive.  No doubt about it.  To NFL Scouts, unfortunately, they don't mean much.  So Tebow will get his just due by going down in history as a great college player.

The "Gomer" reference wasn't a sweeping generalization for the South.  I was specifically talking about "Timmy Sunshine."  Aside from his lack of pro talent, he annoys me because his image is such a crock.  Yes, we are invited to hear Tebow's religious testimony ( and he and I have similar religious beliefs).  Unfortunately his loud and annoying public prayers are nothing more than pandering to the stupid.  God/Gods/Deities aren't rooting for some teams over others and there are plenty of other "good kids" who don't slime the public with contrived sermons.

Wait... God is speaking to me... and he wants Ray Lewis to ear-hole Tim Tebow.  I change my mind; declare for the draft Timmy.

Wow!! you should really seek medical help. After reading that ridiculous rant one thing is for sure there is nothing similar between yours and Tebow's religious beliefs. His "loud and annoying" prayers are a testament to his character because unlike most people in this world he has the balls to stand up for what he believes in and not let the jealous naysayers such as your self to intimidate him into being scared to show he is a man of faith. I applaud Tebow's courage and commend him for being a leader of men with faith and showing young people in this world that it is not a weakness to have faith but a tremendous strength.

Phil 4:13  I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.

I truly believe the author of this article was trying to be original (congrats to him/her), by not drooling over Tebow because most media does.  Nice try, but Tebow learned this year to modify his game to bring out the best from his teammates - therefore the reduced stats from last year, yet the vastly improved offense.  He makes the best decisions, has a decent arm, and rarely makes mistakes.  Tell me that Detroit Lions would rather have Ornansky (or whatever his name is) taking snaps right now over Tebow?  They would not.  Tebow definitely has some work to get ready for the NFL, but it is college football's version of blasphemy to say that he wasn't better than Shon Greene (does anyone outside of the big ten know who he is?), Crabtree (where was he during the Oklahoma game), and the rest of the Heisman candidates.  Obviously the voters know Tebow is MUCH better than Greene and Crabtree because he finished far ahead of them and Harrell (what a joke that he did not represent in the Heisman voting).  So, the author of this article is seeking controversy from this article.  Either that, or he/she thinks he/she is right and approximately 900 + Heisman voters were wrong.  Would you really take Greene, Crabtree, McCoy, Harrell, or Bradford over Tebow, if you were starting a up a new college team?  You would be insane and hateful if you outright said you would not.  Lastly, be careful about your straying from the topic of your article, because you blended your belief that Tebow won't be a good NFL QB, with the absolute incorrect  assertion that he has not stood out from the rest and not proven anything.  Seriously . . . Tebow's stats and leadership are a fact.

This article really wasn't about Tebow as much as it was about athletes in general.  Tebow was just used as an example to show that all athletes have egos because he is rarely considered to have on.  In reality, he does have an ego, and if he leaves early he'll be allowing it to get the best of him.

Of course he has an ego, it would be impossible to be the kind of leader that he is, or command the respect of his teammates if he did not have some regard for his own abilities.  He may even be angry about these things.   I'm just questioning the attributable quotes, which don't seem verifiable.  He's always seemed to fastidiously avoid making statements about himself and his emotions.

Fair enough.  There aren't actual quotes that I have seen. However, both College Football Talk and Joe Schad are pretty reputable so I don't doubt them.  Also, his actions do seem to follow along with this story.

Tebow said this when asked about not winning the Heisman.
"I don't have to try to use it as motivation, it just is," Tebow said. "And it is for my teammates, too."

To me, that sounds like a nice way of saying, "I think I got screwed out of the Heisman." We know that he is considering entering the NFL Draft and has called out one of the bigger doubters of his NFL QB ability.  Put it all together it looks like he might be letting his hurt ego get the best of him, at least to me.

Well, perhaps.   I think he's handled attention and pressure pretty admirably during the time he has received so much focus.  Everyone may succumb to criticism at times, but he seems like he has a pretty good sense of perspective, so he will probably make his biggest decisions thoughfully.
