The Tennessee Titans signed free agent Sammie Hill, a former Detroit Lions defensive tackle, to a three-year deal on Wednesday. The deal is reportedly worth $11.4 million, with $4 million in guaranteed money.
Sammie Hill started 13 of 15 games in his rookie season while posting 26 tackles, soon after being picked in the fourth round of the 2009 draft by the Detroit Lions. But he was eventually buried on the depth chart behind defensive tackles Ndamukong Suh and Nick Fairley, drafted in 2010 and 2011 respectively by the Detroit Lions. In the past three seasons, Sammie Hill has started only six games but he could find a bigger role with the Tennessee Titans if Sen’Derrick Marks moves on to another team.
The Tennessee Titans’ defensive line has struggled against the run and Sammie Hill has shown promise as a pass rusher as well as a rotational player during his time with the Detroit Lions. Moreover, Tennessee Titans general manager and coach Mike Munchak recently said that getting bigger along the line was a top priority. The 6-foot-4, 329-pound Sammie Hill has considerable size over interior defensive linesmen Jurrell Casey, Karl Klug and Mike Martin.
Sammie Hill will certainly see time in rotation while in a combination with any of the Tennessee Titans’ above three young players. The 26-year-old Sammie Hill could benefit from the increased playing time towards developing his game, while likely getting majority of the work on passing downs.
Last season, Sammie Hill played 15 games (with 15 starts) finishing with 15 tackles and three passes defended. During the past four seasons, Sammie Hill appeared in 59 games (With 18 starts), while amassing 59 tackles and four sacks.
