Blog Photo - Tokyo wins bid to host 2020 Summer OlympicsToday the IOC chose Tokyo to host the 2020 Summer Olympics. Tokyo's bid won over bids from Istanbul and Madrid. The main advantage the Tokyo bid has was that it was considered the safe choice. The city has hosted the Games before, back in 1964. There weren't the security concerns there that the other two bids had, both safety (Istanbul) and economic (Madrid). While the IOC has recently gone for new hosts and opening up new continents and areas to hosting, certainty became a priority this time with the issues Sochi and Rio are having preparing for the 2014 and 2016 Games respectively.

The one major concern about the Tokyo bid was reports of radioactive water leaking from the Fukushima nuclear plant. The Prime Minister of Japan personally guaranteed that the water will not affect Tokyo.

Tokyo won the final vote 60-36 over Istanbul. The first vote produced a tie for second between Istanbul and Madrid, with a latter being eliminated in a runoff. This was Istanbul's 5th consecutive Summer Olympics bid.

Tomorrow the IOC will determine the final sport to be included in the 2020 Games. The candidates are baseball/softball, squash, and wrestling, in its last chance to avoid the chopping block for at least one Olympics.
