Tom Brady, Tim Tebow discussed Aaron Hernandez in 2011
So, you can imagine any headline that would contain all three names has the instant potential to make a vaguely interesting story in light of the recent circumstance. (Hint of caution,) that is what this is, a vaguely interesting story on a slow news day.
Back in December 2011, when the New England Patriots crushed the Denver Broncos 41-23 in a Week 15 matchup. The Broncos, then led by Tebow, came in hot winners of six-straight games, the two star quarterbacks spent a few minutes exchanging post-game pleasantries and a customary handshake. Initially, nothing seemed unusual in the post-game exchange captured by the NFL Films’ highlights video of the game. Until the video in question resurfaced on Tuesday across the web and Masshole Sports called our attention to an ironic dialogue exchanged between Brady and Tebow.
“I’m trying to watch over Aaron (Hernandez) and Brandon (Spikes),” Brady told Tebow, as the two met midfield for the post-game handshake.
“I appreciate that, too, man. They’re good guys,” responded Tebow.
“[Yeah] they’re a lot to handle,” added Brady.
While Orlando Sentinel’s Roger Simmons characterizes the exchange as Tom Brady and Tim Tebow being “worried” about Hernandez, it seems largely impossible and impractical to draw too many meaningful takeaways from the brief soundclip. We simply can’t assume from this quote that the Patriots should have possessed the hindsight to know Hernandez would one day get himself mixed up in a murder investigation, despite his troubling college history. After all, when Hernandez was arrested in connection with the death of Odin Lloyd only one year after signing Hernandez a $12.5 million signing bonus in 2012, the Pats acknowledged they felt “duped".
Tom Brady could have been simply joking around with Tebow about his two former Gators teammates (which is again impossible to judge since we cannot capture the expression on Brady’s face), but the new circumstances seem to give a new meaning to the incident. Or, Brady could have been making post-game small talk, while adding to Tebow on a friendly note that he was taking care of both Hernandez and Spikes, with whom Tebow won a National Championship at the University of Florida.
The fact that the conversation headed in this direction after Brady congratulated Tebow on a great game and stellar season further proves that there probably was nothing serious to the situation.
“Good game, Tim. You’re having a great year,” said Brady.
“Thanks. I appreciate it,” returned Tebow.
“Keep it up. Good things happen to good people,” added Brady.
“I appreciate that,” replied Tebow.
Is this much ado about nothing, or did this exchange foreshadow trouble ahead?.
