Tom Brady told Tim Tebow he was trying to watch over Aaron Hernandez and Brandon Spikes

Were the Patriots really duped by Aaron Hernandez? Or did they know he was trouble all along?

Blog Photo - Tom Brady told Tim Tebow he was trying to watch over Aaron Hernandez and Brandon SpikesPatriots owner Robert Kraft said the Patriots were duped by Aaron Hernandez, and they thought he was an exemplary human being when they gave him a big contract extension about a year ago.

Is that really true?

Thanks to a video from NFL.com that shows a mic'd-up Tom Brady talking to Hernandez's former University of Florida teammate Tim Tebow, we now know that perhaps there's a bit more to the story than Kraft lets on.

You can find the video here (unfortunately it's not embeddable), and at around the 1:30 mark, Brady tells Tebow that he's been trying to keep Tebow's old Florida teammates in line.

"I'm trying to watch over Aaron and Brandon (Spikes, another former UF player). They're a lot to handle."

There's no telling exactly what Brady meant by that, but it's clear that he (and the rest of the Patriots, I would assume) knew that Hernandez wasn't exactly walking the straight and narrow.

Did the Patriots really get duped by Hernandez? Or did they know he was trouble all along, and give him the contract extension anyway, hoping that he'd straighten out his act?

I guess they ran a cost-benefit analysis and decided that Hernandez was worth the risk. Sometimes those go terribly wrong.
