Who’s one step closer to hoisting Lord Stanley? The Wrap-Around is your daily update for last nights’ NHL Playoff action.Red Wings Hold On For 4-3 Win.
Typical Detroit game in terms of shot control, as they had 36 to the 21 of Colorado. Paul Stastny scored the first goal of the game for the Avs, and then the Wings proceeded to score 3 back-to-back in the first period. (Zetterberg, Cleary, and Franzen) Johan Franzen would score again early 2nd to give them a 4-1 lead. But the Avalanche would attempt a close comeback, John-Michael Liles would score 5 minutes in, and Milan Hejduk scored late to make it 4-3. Colorado had many close calls late in the game, but a great save by Osgood with 8 seconds left gave the Red Wings the victory. Franzen had 2 goals and an assist, and Ryan Smyth had 2 assists. Game 2 is in Detroit on Saturday afternoon.
Canadiens Take Game One In 4-3 OT Battle.
A very tricky and for the most part even game. Shots were one apart, and penalties were even. However, Montreal controlled faceoffs, which helped them in the end pull it off. Philadelphia started strong with R.J. Umberger scoring 13 minutes into the first, and Jim Dowd scoring a few minutes later. Montreal would tie it up in the second period, with one goal by Andrei Kostitsyn and the other shorthanded by Alexei Kovalev. The Flyers would score at the beginning of the 3rd on a Joffrey Lupul powerplay goal. Late in regulation, Mike Richards would get a kneeing penalty for hitting Kovalev. Kovalev would end up scoring off of the powerplay on a faceoff with 29 seconds to go in the period. Then, 48 seconds in to OT, Tom Kostopoulos scored to give the Canadiens the game one victory. Game 2 is Saturday night.
