Tom Pernice Jr. is one of many golfer taking advantage of Tiger's absence this week at the AT&T National, which takes place in Bethesda, MD, at the Congressional Country Club. You'd think he might be appreciative of the extra opportunities to bank some cash, and he may be, but his message this week sure didn't sound like it. That AT&T National is now a yearly event hosted by Tiger Woods, and event he would have chosen to play in if healthy, but it's the events Woods decides not to play in that have irked Pernice Jr.
"We need to mandate that they need to play. We can't just let players play any 15 tournaments they want.As a fan of golf, it's hard to argue with mandating Tiger play in 20+ events. And I agree, it's not Tiger's fault because the rules don't mandate a number for him to meet. Woods banks unthinkable amounts of cash in the events he does choose, and simply doesn't need to play in the smaller events on tour.
Michael Jordan didn't get to skip playing in Madison Square Garden when the Knicks were good because he didn't like playing there or whatever. Maybe we need to play more than 15 events [minimum a year]. Maybe we need to play 20. And if you're eligible for the Tour Championship and the tournament of champions [the Mercedes], then maybe you're supposed to play.
I have a lot of respect for our title sponsors and the volunteers and the amount of effort and time and money they put into these events. It would be nice for Tiger to play all over, not just 15 or 20 venues in his career."
It's not like he's just chillin' at home, either, when he's off. He's usually working with one of his numerous charitable foundations helping self the game of golf around the country and world. Let's be honest, he's more valuable trumpeting and raising money for the Tiger Woods Foundation than he is smoking the field at the John Deere Classic in Moline, Illinois.
Admittedly, golf should be able to meet somewhere in the middle. Woods should play more events, or at the very least, mix a handful of tournaments up a year so that each venue gets to see the best golfer in history and least once every few years. I just merely find it odd that everytime someone speaks up and complains about the amount of events Tiger plays in, they always come from someone who's currently benefitting from his absence.
Should the PGA Tour mandate the amount of events Tiger (and Phil Mickelson) play in?
