Is Tomas Hertl the next big thing?

The San Jose Sharks defeated the New York Rangers 9-2. Mandatory Credit: Ed Szczepanski-USA TODAY SportsI'll be honest. I had never heard of Tomas Hertl until last night. If you know me, you know that I'm not the most avid hockey fan in the world, and I just don't get a chance to watch many games when it's still MLB playoff season.

That having been said, I saw a lot of people talking about someone named Tomas Hertl on Twitter, and I was compelled to check it out.

It turns out that this kid is pretty damn awesome, and had a hell of a game last night for the Sharks against the Rangers.

The 19-year old rookie had 4 goals, including one ridiculous crossover that was one of the most incredible goals I've ever seen, leading the Sharks to a 9-2 victory.

Check it out:

Now, this might be an overreaction, but I'm wondering if some true hockey fans can chime in and let me know: Is this guy the next big thing?

He has 6 goals and an assist through three games, and has recorded at least one point in all 3 games. He's only 19, and I understand that 3 games is an absurdly small sample size, but he was the 17th overall pick in the draft and now he's making good players look ridiculous.

Is he really this good? Or is it just a several-game aberration?

What I find really odd is how many were poo-pooing the goal!  Here is a league that is struggling to get beyond  being a "cult" sport. A kid does something that gets the attention of the non-hockey world.  This can do nothing but good things for the game and there are some in the game *cough* adam oates *cough* who just put it down.  I think the game could use a little more enthusiasm like that.  And I REALLY hope Hertl continues to do great things for the Sharks and the NHL.

I agree 100%. It would be like people criticizing a basketball player for using a crossover to get by his opponent. It was effective. Why would anyone complain? If you don't like it... block the shot. It's that simple.

That goal rocked my face off.

"Several-game aberrations" don't happen a whole lot in hockey. I think we're looking at the next big thing. I'll be keeping an eye on him for sure, because I don't think we've seen the last of crazy goals from him.
