Tommy Bowden Fired By Clemson After 3-3 Start
Tigers Give Baby Bowden The Boot. Who Will Lead Tigers Next Season?
READ MORE:
With a talented corps of skill players returning and a string of highly ranked recruiting classes, Clemson University, its coaches, and its fans thought they'd be sitting pretty right now.  Pretty probably isn't the word they'd use now to describe their 3-3 performance at this point in the season.

For years Tommy Bowden has felt the weight of those lofty expectations.  Today Bowden felt the weight of the axe Athletics Director Terry Don Phillips used to chop up the remainder of his contract.

Clemson has fired Tommy Bowden.

Don't cry too much for Bowden, though.  Reports are that he stands to make about $4 million from the new contract extension he signed after flirting with Arkansas last winter.

Bowden was in his tenth season at Clemson and will leave the university with a 72-45 record over those ten years.

While he had a lot of highs during his time with the Tigers, most fans will remember his less-than-stellar performances in games that Clemson should have won handily.  There are only so many times you can win a few big games at the end of the year to save your job.  If Bowden were a cat, he would have used his eighth life last year in the Boston College game.  Unfortunately for him, this year's Wake Forest game killed that final life.

There's lots of buzz that Vanderbilt's Bobby Johnson is going to be a prime candidate to replace Bowden at Clemson.  Johnson is a native of South Carolina.  He coached and played at Clemson.  Oh yeah, he's also one of the hottest coaching names out there after actually winning a few games at Vanderbilt.

I know it's still too early to tell, but who do you think will replace Bowden?  Should be an interesting search.

CLEMSON FIRES TOMMY BOWDEN  (Spartanburg Herald Journal)

UPDATE:  Benched QB Cullen Harper Speaks To ESPN

Benched QB Cullen Harper, in comments to ESPN, had this to say about Bowden:

"They just told us. It's what he deserved," said senior quarterback Cullen Harper, who was benched after the Tigers' loss to Wake Forest loss and replaced by highly regarded sophomore Willy Korn. "Dabo Swinney is a fine man and will do an excellent job."

"I'd call it karma," he said. "I thought it needed to be done. I think anytime a head coach or someone in a leadership position starts to place blame on his coaches and players, it weakens their respect on the team. His past experiences have shown he's done that."

Ouch.  It's what he deserved?  That's brutal, even if it's true.

No wonder Bowden didn't win more games with Harper at the helm.  Guess that says a lot about his character.  He should have plenty of time to think about what could have been while he's watching Willy Korn earn the respect and praise of the Clemson faithful.

I think this story is going to get weirder and weirder as the days go by.

I wonder how much Lane Kiffin will factor into this job at the end of the season?

It won't.  My guess is Kiffin goes to Tennessee if he goes anywhere east of the Mississippi.  He's a west coast guy and as much as I respect him I can't imagine him working out in a small souther school, it just doesn't fit the persona.

I'm not going to say this firing was expected, or "about time" or anything like that.  What I will say is that Clemson fans would tolerate nothing less.  Rob Spence won't last the season either but should be able to go to a Western Michigan or UAB and put up ridiculous numbers running the same pseudo-spread offense he ran at Clemson and Toledo before that.

With regards to Haper's comments, I wouldn't call it sour grapes, he's done nothing but support Willy Korn and encourage the competition, going back to before last season.  I think instead it's a matter of a scapegoat decision by Bowden to save his job.  Look at the comments by CJ Spiller as well, how "at the end, [Tommy] was just yelling at us to be leaders and a lot of guys were off the bandwagon."  I think that says a lot about leadership.  TIme for a new leader.

He was raised in the south and was reportedly VERY interested in the Arkansas job (I think his dad my have coached there too but I'm not sure).  The only west coast job that could possibly be open is at Washington or Washington St and Clemson or Tennessee would be a way better job than either of those schools.

Completely agree on the quality of UT and Clemson vs. Washington & Washington State, both of which are headed nowhere fast.  Someone with Kiffin's skill would be wasting their time if they chose one of those over UT or Clemson.  Also, Kiffin didn't grow up in the south, he only lived int he south when Monte was coacing at Arkansas when he was 3, grew up in Minnesota and hasn't come back east of the Miss. since going to college 15 years ago.  Coming to Clemson might be a biig stretch....although, Clemson fans are salivating at the possibility I'm sure.

Supposedly the players have taken Cullen Harper's side in the this ordeal.  Going into the future thats probably a good thing since they've banded together.  What it says about Bowden, I'm not sure yet.

Both Clemson and Tennessee are big-time programs and given Kiffin's resume at USC and most recently with Oakland I honestly think his pedigree fits the prestige of either program.

What I find surpising the recent trend in College Football with firing coaches who when 8 games a year, and go to a Bowl Game on a regular basis.  The same happened to Georgia Tech's Chan Gailey after last year.  In 2006 he led GT to the ACC Championship game.  Tennessee fans have a very short memory in that Tennesse won the SEC East last year, went to the SEC Championship last year, and was one interpection away from winning the SEC last year.  My point is that is scary that winning, and going to a Bowl Game on a regualar basis is not enough any more.  Its all about going to a BCS Game now.

Harper seems more than a little bitter. Jesus christ.

I agree, and I hope Tommy does well somewhere else.  Dabo Swenney is a great recruiter, and I hope he stays on with the next coach. He already showed he was smart enough to get rid of Spence.

 Go Tigers!!

I liked Bowden, but he almost came to tears in the press conference.I can think of about 4MILLION reasons he shouldn't cry.$$$$

Here's how I envision it played out:
  • Phillips and Bowden meet this weekend.  Phillips tells Bowden he's not going to be fired now, but if they don't make the ACC Championship then "some changes will be made".

  • Bowden points out the obvious that making the ACC Championship probably isn't going to happen.  Bowden agrees to step down now as long as the buyout clause is still on the table.

  • Phillips agrees to pay Bowden the money for a peaceful "transfer of power".

Clemson gets virtually two months to shop for the coach they want.  Bowden gets a fat payday (which was well-negotiated last winter) and he doesn't have to put up with the fan and media crap that was bound to dominate his last two months at Clemson.

Looks like an expensive win-win from my point of view.

Long over-due. Bowden consistantly recruits top talent and still manages to not win the very weak ACC atlantic and gets blown out by the likes of MD. I think next year will be like Charlie Weiss' first year at Notre Dame, where the new coach will pile up an impressive record with Bowden's recuits...
