I remember when I watched Green Bay's opening Monday Night Football game this year against the Minnesota Vikings I was stunned by how many times Tony Kornheiser mentioned Brett Favre's name. Sure, it was somewhat relevant at the time, but the number of Favre mentions still seemed ridiculously high. At the time, I wish I had counted how many times Kornheiser mentioned Favre's name to Aaron Rodgers's name, but it just didn't happen.Luckily though, Fanhouse managed to do this, although with a different recipient of Kornheiser's praise - Tom Brady. During last night's Monday Night Football game, Adam Gretz tracked how many times Kornheiser mentioned Brady's name to Cassel's.
It wasn't even close. The final count: Tom Brady: 22, Matt Cassel: 9.
And apparently before the opening kickoff, it was already Brady 5, Cassel 1.
What makes this all the more hilarious is that Cassel had a pretty damn good game last night, by far the best of his brief starting career. Cassel finished 18 of 24 for 185 yards with 3 touchdown passes and no picks, all while leading his team to a curbstomping 41-7 win over the Broncos. Seriously, give the man some praise. Yet all Kornheiser apparently wanted to talk about was Brady and how much Cassel sucked in comparison to Brady.
Kornheiser's references ranged from, "If Tom Brady were in the lineup those sack numbers would be cut in half," to "We know Matt Cassel isn't Tom Brady." Incredibly powerful stuff, Tony. Please, tell me more. I was confused for a while and thought this team was actually better without Tom Brady. Glad you clued me in.
Also, I have to wonder how many times Brady's name would have mentioned if Cassel had had a bad game. 103? 268? Lord only knows.
The problem for Kornheiser is that while he's great on Pardon The Interruption, his transition into the MNF booth has been painfully bad at best. He's supposed to be the fan in the booth, asking intelligent questoins and bringing a different perspective to the game. Instead, all I hear is a guy making lame jokes and talking about someone who hasn't played since Week 1 and won't be playing for the rest of the season.
I was a little surprised that Kornheiser even made it back for this season, but he better be gone by next year. His act was old last year, it's even worse now.
Tony Kornheiser loves Tom Brady, Apparently doesn't care about Matt Cassel. [Fanhouse]
