The news isn't getting better for Michael Vick. It appears one of his friends has turned on him. Tony Taylor pleaded guilty this morning and is expected to cooperate with the prosecution in order to gain a lesser sentence. The Smoking Gun has the statement of facts from Tony TaylorOne of Falcons quarterback Michael Vick's co-defendants in the federal dog fighting case reversed himself and plead guilty today as part of a deal with prosecutors, a troubling sign for Vick's legal defense.
Tony Taylor, who along with Vick pleaded not guilty to the charges just four days ago, agreed this morning to cooperate with federal prosecutors in their case against Vick and two other co-defendants, Purnell Peace(cq) and Quanis Phillips.
In the statement of facts, a copy of which you'll find below, Taylor implicates Vick, the Atlanta Falcons's star quarterback, in an array of criminal activity. While the Vick indictment charges that the athlete participated in killing dogs that performed poorly in fights or testing sessions, Taylor's statement of facts does not make a similar allegation against the player (though Taylor admitted once executing two dogs and claimed that codefendants Purnell Peace and Quanis Phillips also killed pit bulls that failed in test fights). Taylor contends that Vick provided most of the gambling funds staked by Bad Newz Kennels when its dogs faced off with other pit bulls in fights in Virginia, New Jersey, and North Carolina. That's not necessarily good news for Vick, but implications that he was involved in the brutal killings of dogs was probably the worst possible outcome of this plea deal. I doubt this is the last of his co-defendents turning.
