Top five replacements for Nemanja Vidic at Manchester United
Sir Alex Ferguson’s unconditional love for his Serbian center back Nemanja Vidic is no secret. The Manchester United manager once again stepped forth to defend Nemanja Vidic against viscous comments from the media, who suggested that the veteran defender should no longer be in Manchester United’s first team.
Injury and performance issues have led a number of analysts and Manchester United fans to question Sir Alex Ferguson’s decision to keep Nemanja Vidic as the first captain of Manchester United.
Nemanja Vidic, who has been sidelined with yet another injury, is being missed by Manchester United’s defensive lines since last season. When media question his ability to replicate his former form and place in the squad, the Old Trafford boss Sir Alex Ferguson stepped forward to defend Nemanja Vidic and claimed that his skipper never fully recovered from his knee injury last season.
The upcoming summer will probably be Sir Alex Ferguson’s last opportunity to cash in for Nemanja Vidic, who turns 31 this month. Sir Alex Ferguson is rebuilding his squad, so he could lose his Nemanja Vidic for younger blood.
The following is a list of world class defenders that Sir Alex Ferguson would consider as replacement for Nemanja Vidic.
1 – Neven Subotic
Neven Subotic appears to be the most likely replacement for Nemanja Vidic. Firstly, Neven Subotic is considered to be one of the best defenders in the Bundesliga. Secondly, Neven Subotic happens to be the international teammate of Nemanja Vidic, so he would the youngster would have an easier time settling in. Thirdly, Neven Subotic belongs to the German champions Borussia Dortmund, which is the same club who sold Shinji Kagawa to Manchester United last summer.
The 23-year-old center back is also being targeted by Chelsea. Neven Subotic is predicted to become a hot transfer prospect next summer, therefore expect Manchester United to place a bid on him.
2 – Kyriakos Papadopoulos
For a defender Kyriakos Papadopoulos has made a lot of noise in the football community. Kyriakos Papadopoulos is among the most highly rated youngster in Europe. The Greece international became the youngster player to play in the Greek league when he debuted for Olympiakos at the age of 15.
Manchester United showed interest in him 2010, but Schalke 04 won his services. Since then Kyriakos Papadopoulos has appeared in 81 games and scored seven goals for Schalke 04. The 20-year-old defender has also started to play for his country.
AC Milan attempted to sign him during the summers, but they were reported to FIFA by Schalke 04 for approaching their player illegally.
3 – Giorgio Chiellini
Juventus will receive a number of bids from top class European clubs for Giorgio Chiellini this summer. Giorgio Chiellini was the cornerstone of Juventus’ undefeated campaign in Serie A last season.
The most impressive fact about Giorgio Chiellini is that he is a consistent performer. Giorgio Chiellini turned 28 this year, so the Italian is in his prime form. Manchester United will have to break into their banks to afford his transfer fee. Nonetheless, signing in Giorgio Chiellini would turn Manchester United’s defense into an impregnable wall.
Barcelona and Manchester City are keen on signing Giorgio Chiellini as well.
4 – Mats Hummels
Mats Hummels is probably the most highly rated young defender in the world. The 23-year-old partners up with Neven Subotic at Borussia Dortmund; therefore convincing Mats Hummels to leave Germany would be a very hard job.
A blockbuster transfer deal for Borussia Dortmund and lucrative contract to Mats Hummels could see the Germany international at Manchester United. Bayern Munich made a huge mistake by selling off Mats Hummels to Borussia Dortmund in 2009. Since then Mats Hummels has played in over a 100 games and scored 12 goals for Borussia Dortmund.
Any club in the world would be happy to sign him!
5 – Dede
Dede is recognized as the best defender in South America. The Brazilian was linked to Manchester United last season, but Vasco da Gama’s outrageously high transfer fee demands broke down the negotiating process.
The 24-year-old center back’s contract with Vasco da Gama runs till 2015, which means Dede could be available in the transfer market next summer. Dede would welcome a move to Manchester United where he will join his compatriot Rafael da Silva in defense.
AC Milan, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain will turn out to be Manchester United’s competitors for Dede.
