Tottenham Hotspur defeats Man United at Old Trafford after 23 long years
Tottenham Hotspur celebrated a historic victory over English football giants Manchester United on Saturday night following a thrilling 3-2 victory at Old Trafford. It took 23 years for Tottenham Hotspur to end their winless curse at Manchester United’s home, Old Trafford.
Andre Villas-Boas was exuberant after his side’s win. The former Chelsea manager extolled his men’s fighting spirits in front the media after the game. Meanwhile, Sir Alex Ferguson was left to rue over another under par performance by his side.
Jan Vertonghen drew first blood early in the game with a shot that deflected off Jonny Evans before coming to rest in Manchester United’s net. Gareth Bale came up with a superb finish near to the half hour mark.
Manchester United kicked off the second half with impressive attacking chemistry and it didn’t take long for Manchester Untied to get one in. Wayne Rooney came up with a perfect cross from the right wing which Nani clinically placed in the back of the net.
Just a minute later Tottenham scored again. Gareth Bale took a powerful shot that was saved but the resulting deflection came to Clint Dempsey. From there onwards it was an easy finish for the American.
The ball kicked off again and Manchester United scored in under a minute. Robin van Persie played a stunning through ball to Shinji Kagawa who produced finesse finish. Unfortunately for Manchester United this was the last goal of the night.
The Old Trafford boss Sir Alex Ferguson was visibly unhappy with his side’s performance. The Scotsman seemed ready to bring out the axe at a couple of players. Manchester United’s lack lustrous defense has become a matter of serious concern.
Manchester United’s defensive department is facing a severe injury crisis. However, no excuses can be made about Manchester United’s impassionate performance. Expect Sir Alex Ferguson to give his players the hair-dryer treatment this week.
On the other hand, Andre Villas-Boas has at last redeemed himself. After being sacked by Chelsea last season, many questioned Andre Villas-Boas capabilities. The young manager has proven he has skills to lead underdogs to glory.
It will be interesting to see Tottenham Hotspur play against the other English football giants. Andre Villas-Boas will be tested in the next couple of weeks. Tottenham Hotspur will have to show more chemistry and unity against the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea.
Nonetheless, Andre Villas-Boas has a deep and talented squad and is expected to record more success in the future.
