Tottenham knocked down by former star Berbatov in 1-0 defeat to Fulham
Fulham manager Martin Jol hailed the former Tottenham star Dimitar Berbatov as the striker lived up to his promise of scoring goals. This was Dimitar Berbatov’s 11th goal in 24 league appearances for Fulham.
Dimitar Berbatov helped Fulham record a memorable win over Tottenham Hotspur at the Craven Cottage by scoring the lone of the game. Martin Jol lauded lauded the ex-Manchester United striker and revealed that he had promised to score in the game.
“Before the game you hope for a point... but Berbatov came to me and promised me... He said: 'you have to trust me'. I thought he was joking. But he said it before the match against Stoke (where he scored the winner) and he is a wonderful player. It was one of the best wins ever,” Martin Jol said.
Martin Jol admitted Dimitar Berbatov was a player who needed to be controlled very carefully. Martin Jol reckons Dimitar Berbatov is still one of the best strikers in the Premier League and his impressive goalscoring average is proof of that.
“He's a remarkable boy,” Martin Jol said. “He's a different personality, but he's said it twice now. Against Stoke before the match and he said it again today. The only thing he wants is a day off if he scores. I promised him a day off and he scores!
“He looks like he's sulking and sometimes his body language is not great, but you know that he can be a winner, and he can decide games for you.”
Defeating Tottenham Hotspur must have been a bitter sweet moment for Martin Jol, who spent three seasons as the boss of White Hart Lane. Martin Jol claims he gained no personal satisfaction by defeating his former club, but there seemed to be a smile hidden on his face.
“No, it's only about the three points,” Martin Jol said. “It's nice that it was here only because White Hart Lane is such a difficult place to go to.”
