Tracy McGrady Regrets Leaving Raptors
Thirteen years later, Tracy McGrady is looking back on his career and in hindsight regrets leaving the Toronto Raptors for free agency in 2000 . At the time, McGrady was playing with his distant cousin, Vince Carter, and a bunch of other seasoned veterans such as Kevin Willis and Charles Oakley. However, McGrady left freezing Toronto for warmer climates near his hometown in Orlando.
“In hindsight, looking back, obviously I wish I had stayed in Toronto,” McGrady said. “There’s no doubt we could have contended for a championship. I think about that often. But if ‘if’ was a fifth, you know?”
Had McGrady stayed in Toronto, he and Vince Carter could’ve been the closest thing to Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen in their era. “Me and Vince were in the perfect situation,” McGrady said. “You’ve got the two young superstars and you’ve got these old vets. They were our force field. They protected us from anything that happened on that basketball court. They did all the dirty work. And all we had to do was just concentrate on putting the ball in the hoop and guarding who we were guarding. It was just such a great time in my career.”
Unfortunately, we’ll never know what could have happened had McGrady and Carter stayed together in Toronto. But we do know one thing, they probably would have been a whole lot better had they stayed together than apart.
