Who's Getting Dealt? [MLB Trade Deadline Live Thread]

Blog Photo - Trade Deadline Live ThreadWe are ten days from the Major League Baseball trade deadline. While it's not the last chance for a team to improve for the stretch run (waiver deals can be made until the end of August), it's the last chance for a big deal most of the time. The last few years though, increased parity plus the second wild card has created a market with a lot of potential buyers and not a lot of potential sellers.

While some still think Cliff Lee might be dealt, the biggest name on the market appears to be Cubs pitcher Matt Garza. Rumors are have already been flying the past week that he will soon be traded to Texas. If the Ranger do make that deal, it'll be a big boost to a rotation that has suffered from injuries all year. Make no mistake, Garza isn't an ace, but he'd be a great #3 behind Yu Darvish and Derek Holland.

After Garza, there aren't a lot of impact names on the market. Alex Rios of the White Sox could be a nice outfield piece for a team. Michael Young is having a decent year, and could be dealt by the Phillies team that doesn't seem sure if they want to buy or sell. Then there's the usual assortment of relievers that get dealt for B- and C-level prospects.

For some teams, it's still a question on what they're going to do. The Royals are still under .500, but acted in the offseason like they were going to go for it. The Nationals are still scuffling. What will they do to respond? The NL West is a bastion of mediocrity, which has kept most of the division in the hunt. Will any of them use that as an opportunity?

We'll be using this live thread to keep track of all the trades that go down over the next 10 days. Q it up here for news and analysis.

Orioles score another starting pitcher by acquiring Bud Norris for LJ Hoes and Josh Hader.  Dan Duquette did quite well during this process by picking up 2 starters and a reliever without giving up any of the O's top prospects.

Ken Rosenthal give the tweet of the deadline in announcing the deal.

Orioles agree to acquire Norris from #Astros for Hoes and another piece.

I guess, but they weren't exactly impact acquisitions either, and Delmonico was actually one of the O's better prospects. I'm quite a bit skeptical on Norris, but it's something I guess.

With the injury and subsequent visit to the DL for Yadier Molina, the Cardinals kicked the tires on trying to get Dioner Navarro from the Cubs but no deal was made.  It looks like the next couple of weeks could get even more interesting in Cardinal nation

Alrighty then...M's do nothing. I guess that's okay...and makes more sense in hindsight. They're not making a run this year, they have a lot of young talent, and they are looking better (generally...ugh last night). Rumor has it there's another pitcher down in Tacoma that's a pretty big deal.

Ian Kennedy is also headed to the Padres.

The Royals get Justin Maxwell from the Astros for Kyle Smith. And Dayton Moore continues to prove his incompetence.

Tampa Bay Rays also made a move today picking up the injured Jessie Crain from the White Sox for a player to be named later or cash.  The final transaction will be determined when Crain comes off the DL and is able to pitch for the Rays

The Angels have shipped Alberto Callaspo to their division rivals, the Oakland A's.  Callapso figures to give Billy Bean some infield depth as the A's look to keep their hold on the AL West

Red Sox, White Sox and Tigers pull off a 3 team trade that IMO, really will benefit all parties involved.  The principles are Jake Peavy heading to the Red Sox, the Tigers get Jose Iglesias, a short shop that figures to replace Jhonny Peralta when his suspension for the involvement of Biogenesis comes down and the White Sox get Avisail Garcia, a prized prospect who a lot of scouts feel could make a huge impact in the years to come.

That's what rebuilding are supposed to do with older relievers, flip 'em for prospects. This is especially true with Perez, who has had problems with control before, and is an extreme fly ball pitcher (meaning Safeco helps him a lot). He could implode at any moment.

It doesn't make it any easier to take, when your club is finally showing a little bit of life offensively, and the only one in the bullpen worth squat is on the block. Seriously...besides Felix and Kuma, our pitching sucks.

I think we're losing our only consistently good reliever in Oliver Perez. I can't confirm the rumors but I'm seeing stuff all over the place since about a week ago. *sigh*

The Royals should sell but at .500 they think they are buyers. If they do buy, I hope they can land a Howie Kendrick type, as he is locked up for a few years. Unfortunately, it would like cost the Royals Ventura or Zimmer.

Tigers and Braves both make minor moves that could have major impacts.  Downs is nasty on lefties and Jose Veras has done a really good job out of the bullpen for a bad Astros team.

Atlanta has gotten some bullpen help, trading for Scott Downs. The Angels received reliever Cory Rasmus, who is not very good. It's a salary dump for Los Angeles.

Milwaukee has traded Francisco Rodriguez to the Orioles for third base prospect Nick Delmonico.

Didn't take long for it to get overshadowed, but the Garza to the Rangers trade has finally been completed. The Cubs get Mike Olt, A-ball pitcher C.J. Edwards, pitcher Justin Grimm, and a player to be named later.

Well the Nationals made their first move, but it wasn't a trade. They fired their hitting coach.
