There's some interesting news out of Denver today: Travis Henry has been cut by the Denver Broncos. Now, you're probably wondering, why is this interesting? Well, it's interesting because Henry has nine illegitimate kids. Yes, NINE.
Henry was actually almost jailed last year when he couldn't pay $9,800 he owed in child support. He had to borrow money from the Tennessee Titans to pay it off.
You may also remember that last year he signed a 5-year deal with the Broncos for $22.5 million, but instantly ran into a serious issue about whether or not he had tested positive for marijuana. Henry ultimately won his appeal against the NFL - which was looking to suspend him for a year - but it was yet another problem that a team Henry played for had to deal with.
That's why it shouldn't be any shock that Mike Shanahan's statement on the release today was short and to the point:
"We did not feel his commitment to the Broncos was enough to warrant a spot on this football team."It continuously astounds me that athletes can actually be this stupid. How someone can have nine illegitimate kids by nine women is almost beyond comprehension. And how after that, they jeopardize the one job they'll ever have that makes them significant money.
Because let's be honest here. Travis Henry isn't going to law school or business school. His major source of income is the NFL. And stupidly, Henry never seemed to realize that one day that was going to end. It might not end just yet, as he'll likely be picked up by some other team, but he's got maybe three years left max, earning nothing significant.
The worst thing is what's going to happen to those kids? They're not going to have a father, let alone receive any money after Henry's career is over. I shudder at the thought.
What's scary about all of this is that Henry isn't the first imbecile to do something like this, and he isn't going to be the last either. Time and time again we see pro athletes who live the high life when they're playing, only to meet the cold harsh realities of the real world when they retire, or get unceremoniously released.
I'd like to say something like "Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it," but what's the point. It's not like anyone's listening anyway.
