In other news: A 5 year-old Arkansas boy was handling a shooting rifle. Arkansas is a great place.
Our last peril into Arkansas hunting proved to be exaggerated, but this story appears to be true. Tre Merritt, all of 5, killed a bear 12 times his size while hunting with his grandfather.
There's so many great lines from this story but none is better than the fact that young Merritt is a descendant of Davy Crockett, and his father is doubting the merits, no pun intended, of the legendary frontiersman, folk hero."Tre Merritt was in a tree stand with his grandfather when he saw the bear walk out of a thicket. Tre’s grandfather says “he came in about 40 to 50 yards and when he got in the open, I whistled at him and he stopped and I said ‘shoot him Tre’”
After Tre pulled the trigger, his grandfather said, “I told him, I said ‘Tre, you missed the bear.’ He said, ‘papaw, I squeezed the trigger and I didn’t close my eyes.’ He said, ‘I killed him.’”
"His 10th great-grandfather was Davy Crockett," Mike Merritt said. "And Davy supposedly killed him a bear when he was three. And Tre is five and really killed a bear. I really doubt if Davy killed one when he was three."I think there's little doubt who's just ascended to the top of coaching candidates for the Arkansas Razorbacks head football coach.
