Originally, some very surprising news this afternoon out of Louisiana. Stanford's Trent Johnson, fresh off a Sweet 16 run, will be leaving to coach LSU who finished at 13-18. On second glance, probably a good move for Trent on multiple levels.
1) More money. A lot more money.
2) The Lopez twins are leaving ... very little returning.
3) A few, OK, many more "resources" when it comes to recruiting.
And it probably didn't help his mentor, Mike Montgomery, was returning to coach Stanford's heated rival. He probably didn't like his odds against someone who's clearly a better coach.
Speaking of Montgomery, unfortunate timing that this position didn't open up last week when he accepted the California job.
Should that stop Bob Bowlsby? I have to believe Montgomery would much rather return to the place his built his career and turned the Cardinal into an upper tier basketball school. That's probably not going to happen, but you can imagine the fuel that would be thrown into the fire between these rivals if he were to switch across the Bay?
If not, Randy Bennett (St. Mary's) would make a solid hire.
