Tuomo Ruutu Suspended For 3 Games For His Hit On Darcy Tucker
Tuomo Ruutu Will Get Some Time Off After This Ridiculous Hit On Darcy Tucker

We mentioned the incident last night, but now Tuomo Ruutu of the Carolina Hurricanes has been suspended for 3 games, after this vicious hit on Darcy Tucker. You can witness the carnage at tha 0:07 mark in the video, and a few other times later in the video, from several angles.

What do you think about the suspension? Did Ruutu get what he deserved? Or should it have been longer? Or shorter, for that matter. Let us know in the comments.

Again, all I'm seeing is a guy finishing a check. When a guy is called for boarding, typically it is when a guy is like 5' from the boards and is checked so that he is sent head first into the boards. That wasn't the case here. You see checks of this type every game, The difference here is that Tucker was injured.

Ruutu should've been suspended for 10 games in my opinion. You cant board a defenseless player.

Why do they allow such behavior on the ice.  This wouldn't be tolerated on a football field or baseball diamond.  He quite literally could have broken his neck the way he slammed him.  Do you suppose it will take that kind of injury to make hockey take a look at their rules and by laws???

The first time I saw the hit, it didn't look like anything special, just a check.  When seen in slow-mo, it appears Ruutu put all his body weight behind him to hit Tucker between the shoulder blades, and into the boards.  In any case, Tucker went down in a heap, obviously either unconscious or close to it.  Part of me says it was a vicious hit and deserving of the suspension, while the other part says people turn in to watch hockey because of the hits and the fights, so WE have created the monster that hits like this are, and therefore Ruutu is only doing what he is paid to do, play hockey and play it hard, hard checks, hard hits.

I'm just very glad I'm not the guy who makes these decisions, to be honest.  Why don't they ask Tucker what he thinks, seeing as he has been the deliverer of many of the same kind of hits?

I have to agree with a portion of what you say, because during the game that is exactly what I saw as well.  It isn't until it is isolated and the camera slowed down that it looks like anything else.  THAT is when you can see the effort, but as you say, it is from right behind him, it isn't as if Ruutu comes flying at him from five or ten feet away trying to deliberately hurt him.

Got to agree.  One of the softer boarding calls I can remember seeing.  If Tucker gets up, there's no suspension.  So why suspend Ruutu just because Tucker stayed down?
