The Georgia Bulldogs are at the top of the college football pyramid right now with the #1 ranking in the land according to the Coaches Poll. But let's remember one thing here, we haven't played a single down of official football yet, so hopefully Georgia is just keeping their heads down, working hard, and doing what needs to be done.Or not.
Yes, this past weekend the Georgia Bulldogs managed to do enough damage to make Marvin Lewis cringe.
First up, we had a fight at the oddly named bar The Library in Athens where two Bulldogs players got clocked by thrown beer bottles according to Online-Athens:
Bulldogs Donavon Baldwin and Marcus Dowtin apparently were hit in the head with bottles in the early-morning dust-up, which broke out of a crowded scene inside the Clayton Street bar The Library, Athens-Clarke police said.
And it wasn't just Baldwin and Dotwin who got into trouble. Former sophomore defensive end Michael Lemon, who was dismissed from the team last month after his arrest on an aggravated battery charge, was arrested for underage consumption of alcohol at the hospital.
While I applaud Lemon for accompanying his former teammates to the hospital, I'll forever wonder why he brought that fifth of Jack with him. Swigging a handle in a hospital lobby is not exactly subtle.
And if you thought that was the end of the weekend shenanigans, you'd be wrong. In a completely separate incident, junior long snapper Jeff Henson was arrested for peeing on the side of bank early Sunday morning. Because Henson also was charged with DUI last November — he missed the Sugar Bowl as punishment — he was suspended indefinitely.
At least he was contrite though.
"There's no excuse for being out the weekend before camp."
Wait, all this was happening the weekend before camp? Man oh man, glad to see the Bulldogs have their heads screwed on straight. I have no doubt they'll keep that #1 ranking all season.
By the way, in case you were counting, there have now been eight Georgia football players arrested and jailed in 2008.
And just to get back to the fight, no one is sure who started it yet. But if I had to guess, I'd say Urban Meyer.
BONUS UPDATE: Turns out a guy who was seen on a surveillance camera breaking flower pots and a parking lot control arm outside the hospital was junior linebacker Darius Dewberry. He now owes the hospital $2,100.
