Portland State made a first round exit in this year's NCAA Tournament to Kansas, but it definitely would have been better had they stuck around. That's because two star Portland State players - Jeremiah Dominguez and Scott Morrison - have been arrested by authorities in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, for their role in a spring break attack that left one man hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. Portland State officials only confirmed this today.
Dominguez (in picture), a junior, was the Big Sky Conference player of the year and Morrison, a senior, was named the conference's defensive player of the year.
The Oregonian originally had an early afternoon article up that said both players were facing possible attempted murder charges, before editing the article. The current version has no mention of the possible charges they face, stating that prosecutors in Mexico said it was standard procedure for charges not to be released while an investigation is under way.
Dominguez and Morrison allegedly attacked the victim, Kyle Meagher, 23, of East Lansing, Mich., early Saturday outside two bars after Meagher asked if there was a problem between Morrison, Dominguez and some students he was helping supervise as part of his work with a company called Horizon Tours.
Whatever happened next wasn't pretty.
Alejandro Rojas, general manager of the Balboa World Class Clinic, a hospital where Meagher was taken by a cab driver after the alleged assault, said "Kyle was choking, his gums were all damaged, his lower jaw was broken into pieces and he had internal bleeding. You couldn't do damage like this with a baseball bat -- it's worse."
Meagher, who identified the players as being involved in the attack, is apparently now conscious and in stable condition Both Dominguez and Morrison were scheduled to have a hearing today.
Perhaps even worse, Dominguez was called a "leader" by his coach only a month ago when he won conference player of the year honors.
Needless to say, Dominguez won't be looked at as much of leader anymore. And he and his buddy are likely going to spend an awful long time in Mexican jail - which probably won't be real pleasant.
