UFC 100 Live Thread: Frank Mir vs Brock Lesnar, Georges St Pierre vs Thiago Alves

Can Frank Mir Catch Brock Lesnar Again? Or Will Brute Strength Win Out? [UFC 100 Live Thread]

7/11/09 in MMA   |   Pat   |   5232 respect

UFC 100 is tonight, and it's supposed to be the biggest event in MMA history. The full card is over on our preview and predictions thread, but here's the main card that you'll see on the PPV.

Heavyweight Title Fight:
Brock Lesnar vs Frank Mir

Welterweight Title Fight:
Georges St Pierre vs Thiago Alves

Middleweight #1 Contender Fight:
Dan Henderson vs Michael Bisping

Jon Fitch vs Paulo Thiago
Yoshihiro Akiyama vs Alan Belcher

Frank Mir is the interim heavyweight title holder and Brock Lesnar is the heavyweight title holder, thanks to his win over former champ Randy Couture. This fight will unify the belts and give the UFC a rather formidable champion, no matter who wins.

GSP has been a dominant welterweight champion, but Thiago Alves looks to be his biggest challenge yet. He has won 10 of his last 11 fights, and he avenged his only loss, which was a knockout at the hands of Matt Serra.

If you're watching the Pay-per-view, then chat it up here throughout the fights. Feel free to leave your predictions here, and talk about the fights all night. To see the results of the preliminary fights, click here. Enjoy the fights!

UFC 100: Jon Fitch vs. Paulo Thiago

I usually get slightly perturbed when these swing bouts follow the main event. The main event is supposed to be just that: the main event. The last fight of the night. The showstopper.

I understand how and why they happen, but it's still very anti-climactic.

The crowd is almost always asleep after the main events. There is rarely any energy in the arena for these swing bouts. A good portion of the crowd here at Radio City left after the Brock Lesnar-Frank Mir fight.

Sometimes, we're lucky enough to see a great fight. Other times, not so much.

Jon Fitch and Paulo Thiago's welterweight bout at UFC 100 was somewhere in between. Nothing too spectacular at all. In fact, the bout -- a unanimous decision victory for Fitch (23-3) -- was sort of boring. Had it happened before the main events, it might have been more intriguing to watch and appreciate the groundwork. Fitch won the bout, 30-27, 29-28, 29-28.

This is not a slight on Thiago (11-1) or Fitch. Not in the least.

The issue is after driving a Lamborghini for a few hours, how do you get behind the wheel of a Chevy Lumina?

Fedor would stomp anyone's a$$ in the UFC, but until the refs call it right Lesnar shouldnt lose.  You cant go 5 minutes on the ground and not get stood up once, plus the 4-5 shots he put squarly on the back of Mir's head at the end.

7/12/09   |   Superbleeder   |   94 respect

Before everyone says Fedor/Lesnar he has to beat Barnett first.  Not saying he will lose but it could happen.  Cant forget Carwin either he looks awesome too.

7/12/09   |   ixnay

shane carwin will be the most likey next opponent for brock if he wins against velasquez.. but the fight between capt. america & big nog is just a run in the mill in case carwin losses...

And yeah... no matter how "good" the welterweight class is, no one has been able to challenge GSP. Let's see GSP vs Anderson Silva. There's no other option.

I would agree that Carwin deserves a shot before Couture deserves a rematch. However, I think that if Cain wins, he deserves a title shot too. If he beats Carwin, then he's right there. Although, I would have no problem with Carwin and Kongo fighting for a title shot. Bottom line is that I would kill for any of the top 4 Affliction heavyweights (Fedor, Barnett, Rogers, Arlovski) to get a shot at the UFC title. The UFC is far deeper in every division except for heavyweight. The HW division is still pretty weak.

WOW!!!! Hendo just said that "Bisping hits like a B*tch!" LOL.

7/12/09   |   ruvian   |   17 respect

The Hendo KO of Bisping was AWESOME!!!!! Bisping had it coming. Hey Bisping you got KNOCKED THE F*** Out!!!

GSP was smart against Alves. Neutralize ALves by keeping him on the ground. The only thing that bothered me about it was that  GSP was almost satisfied to take him down & be on top. Alves couldn't adjust to the takedowns or defend against them. Smart gameplan by GSP, just thought he could've probably done some ground & pound to finish it by the 3rd or 4th.

The Lesner-Mir fight was something I had been waiting for. I thought Mir had a chance. He looked like he wanted to strike with him. And for a second looked like he would've been able to stand with him if he avoided the power punches (which is basicly any punch that Lesner would throw). But unfortunately Mir can not stop a take down from Lesner. Nuttin against Mir, he is one of my favorite fighters, but when you got a guy like Lesner taking you down. You can defend it but most likely it will be unsuccessful, as he has power in them takedowns.

Brocks actions afterwards CLASSLESS!!!! Both Kenny Florian & Miguel Torres said the same thing on the MMA Live post fight show. Brock you're a great athlete, no doubt you can dominate the Heavyweight division....But fight Fedor before you start talking crap like you did. Fedor has not lost a fight yet. That one loss of his is a fluke, as it was due to a cut that he got above his eye. So in my eyes it's not really a loss cause he wasn't KO'ed nor did her tapout.

Come on Dana....budge just for this fight at least...Fedor vs. Brock....man that fight would be sweet. Fedor will make Brock tapout in the 2nd round if he hasn't knocked him out in the first round.

I definitely agree with everything you said. I think there's a lot to respect about Brock giving up WWE for the UFC. That was a huge risk on his part, and he could have been completely exposed, and in the octagon, I think he has handled himself very well. But now, I think he has completely embarrassed himself and the sport. What a shame.

One thing about MMA is the respect for the art.  Funny is for fake fighting.  I think if Mir is given a rematch he would tap Lesnar again.  Lesnar is bragging around but he is only 1 and 1 with Mir.  But yeah, Fedor would whoop Lesnar.  I watched wrestling back in the old days but honestly when MMA came around I saw real fighting with class and respect and was sold on it.  Have not watched WWE since.  Lesnar is a big bully with an anvil for a brain.  His day is going to come and his lack of respect for the fans is not the same as in WWE.  It is going to ruin him and I hope is marketability gets fried.

7/12/09   |   Pat   |   5232 respect

Lesnar with the rather convincing win. Definitely not a fan of the way he flipped off the crowd. This isn't the WWE , Brock. Show some freaking class.

7/12/09   |   Scott   |   53678 respect

7/11/09   |   Scott   |   53678 respect

7/11/09   |   Pat   |   5232 respect

What happened to the Fitch-Thiago fight? The UFC website said that it would be on the main card... not sure what happened.

7/11/09   |   Scott   |   53678 respect

I think we've seen a takedown by GSP from every position possible in this match

7/11/09   |   Pat   |   5232 respect

I think that was a close round, but GSP still wins it... 40-36 total.

7/11/09   |   Scott   |   53678 respect

At this point, I'm running out of words to describe GSP.  He's so precise in everything that he does

7/11/09   |   Scott   |   53678 respect

Complete domination so far by GSP.   Alves has no answers for the takedowns

7/11/09   |   Pat   |   5232 respect

30-27... Thiago needs a stoppage if he wants to win. He has to knock him out or submit him. Period. There's no way he wins on the scorecards unless he pulls off a couple 10-8 rounds, and that's not going to happen.

Man, I have no idea. I could understand someone scoring it 29-28 for Akiyama, because I think the first round could have gone either way, but I agree... 30-27 is complete horsecrap.
