Chael Sonnen gets his rematch this Saturday at UFC 148

It has almost been two years since Anderson “The Spider” Silva and Chael Sonnen met in what was perhaps the greatest fight in UFC History.

Sonnen, who was supposed to be just another notch on the belt of Silva’s undefeated UFC career, proceeded to put a beating on the champ like he had never seen.

For almost four and a half rounds Silva was battered and bruised, and had lost every round on all three official judges scoring cards. That is until he decided to make the most dramatic comeback the sport has ever seen. Silva caught Sonnen in a triangle choke late in the 5th round to keep his title and undefeated streak alive.

On Saturady, at UFC 148, Silva and Sonnen will have their long awaited rematch. Let’s take a closer look at the fight card and make some predictions.

Forrest Griffin (-360) vs. Tito Ortiz (+270): This will be the third fight between the two- each fighter has won a close decision. Both are also coming off losses- Forrest to Shogun Hua and Ortiz to Rashad Evans.

This is ultimately Griffin’s fight to lose as he is the bigger, stronger and younger fighter. Ortiz was at the end of his career about three years ago, but he continues to fight for what ever reason.

Griffin has the biggest odds of any fighter on the card, but should not be that much of a favorite over any fighter right now. Forrest seems like he has lost his interest in fighting and is at the point where he fights for paychecks instead of wins. I would not be surprised at all to see Ortiz pull off an upset here. Even though Ortiz is not the fighter he used to be, he continues to enter the ring with a real sense of desperation. He knows there are only a few more fights left in his body.
Prediction: Ortiz by decision.

Anderson Silva (-300) vs. Chael Sonnen (+240): There are only two things that can happen in this fight: either Silva is going to put a massive beating on Sonnen and put on what may be his greatest performance in a career full of great performances or he is going to lose. Either way this fight will be can’t miss theater.

Even though Sonnen has a real shot to beat Silva, it’s difficult to justify betting on him with such measly odds. A bet on Sonnen was getting over +3.5 to 1 during their first fight when Sonnen had the surprise factor and a hurt Anderson in his favor.

Anderson Silva's only perceivable flaw has been his take down defense and a few fighters have been able to take him down during his UFC career. Sonnen on the other hand may be the best MMA wrestler in the UFC and has all of the skills to take Silva down and keep him there, again.

Both fighters are extremely motivated and well prepared for this bout, but it just seems like too much to expect Sonnen to grind out another five round fight against the greatest fighter alive.
Prediction: Silva by knockout in the 3rd round.
