UFC 154: Can St Pierre Regain his Dominant Form After a 16 Month Layoff?

Georges St Pierre makes his long awaited return to the octagon this Saturday at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada. The Welterweight king pin will face interim champ and Muay Thai specialist Carlos Condit. St Pierre enters the fight on a 16 month lay off and will have a myriad of questions sounding his return on Saturday. Can St Pierre regain his old form? Will his surgically repaired knee hold up during a 25 minute fight? But, perhaps, the biggest question surrounding his return may be whether or not the Welterweight division passed him by.

Georges St Pierre returns from a ACL tear to face interim champion Carlos Condit at UFC 154.

Georges St Pierre (-330) vs. Carlos Condit (+270):

This fight hinges on Georges St Pierre’s knee. If GSP is back to his old dominant form, Carlos Condit brings nothing to the table that he has not already seen. Remember, St Pierre has made a career out of making the best in the world look like amateurs. GSP already fought and dominated Thiago Alves, whose striking is as good, if not better, than Condit’s. The question here is if GSP’s knee will hold up. ACL tears are devastating injuries and it is no guarantee that St Pierre will have the same explosiveness in his take downs as before.

Carlos Condit is a dynamic striker and extremely aggressive fighter that excels at finishing fights. Condit will probably not admit it, but the specter of fighting an opponent of GSP’s caliber has changed his strategy. Fighters usually change their approach in championship matches and become more conservative in order to not make a careless mistake. Condit has a chance to win this fight but everything points to a dominant GPS decision.

Pick: GSP via decision.

Johny Hendricks (-145) vs. Martin Kampmann (+125)

The winner of this matchup will probably be the next in line to face the winner of GSP vs. Condit. Hendricks is an outstanding wrestler with knockout power in his right hand, but Kampmann is the more season fighter and technical striker. This fight will center on Kampmann’s ability to stop the take down. If he can stop Hendricks from making this a ground affair, then Kampmann should win via decision or late round stoppage.

Pick: Martin Kampman via third round KO
